American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network of New York (ACSCAN) Learn more about cancer policy issues in New York and how you can join in the fight against cancer.

Many of the most important decisions about cancer are made outside of your doctor’s office. Instead, they are made by your state legislature, in Congress and in the White House. ACS CAN empowers regular people to be part of the growing national movement that is fighting back against cancer. ACS CAN, the nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy affiliate of the American Cancer Society, is holding lawmakers

accountable for their words and their actions. We demand that our leaders not only talk about fighting cancer but take real steps toward decreasing the number of people suffering and dying from cancer.

It is the LAST day of our NYS Legislative session and there is still time to send a message to our lawmakers and ask them to pass a bill that will improve access to paid leave for New Yorkers undergoing cancer treatment, protect patients from losing their job for taking time off to receive care, and ensure that patients and caregivers can take time intermittently. Please take action today!

Please send a message to your lawmaker today to help make significant improvements to New York’s paid family and medical leave program.

New York State’s Temporary Disability Program is the program that millions of New Yorkers rely on when they need to take care of their own serious health needs. Unfortunately, the program is not meeting the needs of cancer patients and others each year.

Will you join me in demanding that state lawmakers not adjourn for the Summer until they have ensured that cancer patients can access a paid family and medical leave program that meets the needs of today's New Yorkers? It will only take a moment using our simple online form. 👇👇

Please send a message to your lawmaker today and ask them to not leave for the Summer without fixing NY's Paid Family and Medical Leave Program.

Each year, nearly 14,000 New Yorkers will be diagnosed with lung cancer. Detecting lung cancer at an early stage can have a dramatic effect on survival rates. Required cost sharing – including co-pays, co-insurance, and deductibles – can be a significant barrier for lung cancer screening.

Will you please send a message to your state lawmakers today and ask them to eliminate patient cost sharing for lung cancer screening and follow-up testing in New York, including through Medicaid? It will take you less than a minute with our easy action form below. 👇👇

Please ask your Senator and Assemblymember to improve access to lung cancer screening by supporting S8553-C and A10429.

The fear of genetic discrimination is leading some individuals to forgo needed cancer screenings or decline participation in clinical trials involving genetic sequencing. Please send a message to your lawmakers today and ask them to help put an end to this type of discrimination.

Please send a message to your lawmakers today and ask them to support legislation that will protect New Yorkers from genetic testing discrimination before they leave Albany in June.

An awesome team from the north country, making things happen!

Today I had the great opportunity of meeting with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network - ACS CAN to discuss crucial aspects of our health system.

Our state is facing a significant amount of new cancer cases that sadly represent over 30,000 deaths in 2024.

For this reason I am excited to support this cause and be part of the solution.
Thank you to Joan Sterling, Erin King, Kelly Timmons, Debbie Merrill and Nick Liporace!

As New York policymakers rush toward the deadline to approve a state budget budget, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network - ACS CAN has some key recommendations for how Governor Kathy Hochul and state leaders can help New Yorkers fight cancer. Lets start with improving access to cancer screening, strengthening smoking cessation and to***co control efforts, improving paid family and medical leave programs, and reducing the impact of medical debt on New Yorkers. Read our op-ed in the Times Union to see the full recommendations.
