Valerie Jackson, commanding general of 4th Marine Logistics Group, awards Arlan Russell an Eagle, Globe and Anchor during an Honorary Marine ceremony at Orting Middle School in Wash., June 8, 2024. The title of Honorary Marine is an honor bestowed by the Commandant of the Marine Corps to civilians who have made extraordinary contributions to the . The program began in 1992 and is intended to strengthen the bond between the American people and the Marine Corps. Notable include Chuck Norris, Gary Sinise, and Joe Rosenthal. U.S. Marines attended World War II Veteran, Pfc. Donn J. Thompson's 100th birthday celebration in Spokane, Washington, on Feb. 24, 2023. Mr. Thompson stands as a representation of the approximately 580,000 Marines who served during WWII that fought to preserve this nation's freedoms.

"Every combatant appreciated the need for an unbreakable code that would help them communicate while protecting their operational plans.

The U.S. knew where to find one: the . Marine Corps leadership selected 29 Navajo men, the , who created a code based on the complex, unwritten Navajo language.

The code primarily used word association by assigning a Navajo word to key phrases and military . This system enabled the Code Talkers to translate three lines of English in 20 seconds, not 30 minutes as was common with existing code-breaking machines.

The Code Talkers participated in every major Marine operation in the Pacific theater, giving the Marines a critical advantage throughout the war.

During the nearly month-long battle for Iwo Jima, for example, six Navajo Code Talker Marines successfully transmitted more than 800 messages without error. Marine noted after the battle that the Code Talkers were critical to the victory at Iwo Jima.

At the end of the war, the Navajo Code remained unbroken."

U.S. Marines with Recruiting Station Seattlle attended Crow Fair in Billings, Mt, an event held annually on the third week of August.

Crow Fair consists of a parade, a dance celebration and a rodeo. The Marines attended to show their support of the local communities in Montana.
