I have three questions for you:

1) Do you live in the Metro Des Moines Area?

2) Do you enjoy Animation, Anime, or Halloween/Horror?

3) Have an interest in helping people register to vote?

If you answered yes to all three, I need YOU to volunteer to help me and the League of Women Voters of Metro Des Moines register voters at next weekends Animate! Des Moines/Nightmare Halloween Convention.

In addition, I am looking for someone who can draw Anime to create a few signs encouraging people to vote.

Yesterday, several LWV of Metro Des Moines members attended the Naturalization Ceremony that kicked off the World Food & Music Festival I. Des Moines. We registered to vote 20 new Americans. It was an honor to help these new citizens gain their right to vote so they can help decide the future of the nation they just pledged their loyalty to.

Right now at the 2024 LWV National Convention, they just honored our late National Peesident, Dr. Deb Turner.

URGENT: ACT NOW! PROTECT CIVIL RIGHTS IN IOWA!
TOOLKIT: https://www.iowanebraskanaacp.org/protectiacivilrights
***CIVIL RIGHTS ARE UNDER ATTACK IN IOWA***

We need your help in addressing this dangerous proposed legislation and Protecting Civil Rights.

*BACKGROUND:
The Iowa House of Representatives is set to vote on a bill (HF 2574) on Monday, April 15. This bill has severe negative consequences for Civil and Human Rights in Iowa. (Talking Points)

*WHAT THE BILL DOES AND WHY WE OPPOSE IT:
Iowa NAACP President Betty Andrews Calls this bill "A dangerous blow to civil rights in Iowa." This bill removes the power that the Iowa Civil Rights Act of 1965 gives to our Seven Iowa Civil Rights Commissioners and gives it to one person, the Director. It is opposed by all 6 current Civil Rights Commissioners, and in not in alignment with the originators of the Iowa Civil Rights Act.
Civil Rights is an non-partisan issue, however, the senate version passed along party lines. Our lawmakers, particularly our Republican members of the Iowa House of Representatives need to hear from you TODAY, and to know that you stand on the side of representation for Iowa's diverse voices. HF2574 (SF2385) is coming to the House floor on Monday, April 15th, let your legislator know that the current version is not acceptable.

***ACT NOW! HERES HOW YOU CAN HELP:
1. Call and email your State Representative IMMEDIATELY.
Use your voice this weekend with your legislators. We need to let them know to nix this bill or at the very least fix this bill. Click find your legislator link HERE to find the contact information for your representative. Contact them THIS WEEKEND to weigh in on this important matter. Use talking points in the document below for your communication. Here is the direct link: https://www.legis.iowa.gov/legislators/find. Because of the party line vote please also call and email Republican representatives. You can find them at https://www.iowanebraskanaacp.org/protectiacivilrights

Please email them a minimum of TWO times AND call them a minimum of TWO times. Contact them on Sunday and then again on Monday morning. It's fine to leave them a message.

2. Join us on Monday at the Iowa Capitol at Noon. The NAACP will provide a free lunch and a brief strategy meeting before going up to speak directly with legislators. (Remember to call and email them before hand. Legislators will gavel in at 1 PM and the bill is on the debate calendar. We will be visible on the ground floor. If you are joining please RSVP for the lunch count at https://www.iowanebraskanaacp.org/protectiacivilrights

3. Spread the word. Please share this information with your organization and friends invite them to join us on Monday. Please text and forward this link. Also if you attend a place of worship this weekend, please also share this information and it's urgency with attendees.
We have created an Emergency Strategy Toolkit to address this issue. You can find that toolkit at https://www.iowanebraskanaacp.org/protectiacivilrights. It includes talking points, legislative contacts , resources and specific steps you can take to assist you in protecting civil rights in Iowa. We will also be at the Iowa Capitol on Monday at Noon talking directly to legislators. THANK YOU FOR HELPING US PROTECT CIVIL RIGHTS IN IOWA!
