Join us Today, October 29th from 6pm to 7:30pm at the Mt. Pleasant Library in the Large Meeting Room for a live recording with Gerardo Sámano Córdova and Los Bookis Podcast!

Writer and artist Gerardo Sámano Córdova will be speaking about his horror debut Monstrilio; a thought-provoking meditation on grief, acceptance, and the monstrous sides of love and loyalty. Córdova will be in conversation with Adrian Gaston Garcia and Sergio Lopez of Los Bookis Podcast, a monthly look at q***r Latine stories and authors.

“Grieving mother Magos cuts out a piece of her deceased eleven-year-old son Santiago’s lung. Acting on fierce maternal instinct and the dubious logic of an old folktale, she nurtures the lung until it gains sentience, growing into the carnivorous little Monstrilio she keeps hidden within the walls of her family’s decaying Mexico City estate. Eventually, Monstrilio begins to resemble the Santiago he once was, but his innate impulses—though curbed by his biological and chosen family’s communal care—threaten to destroy this fragile second chance at life.” —Provided by publisher

Following the discussion there will be a period of Q&A and light refreshments. The first twenty attendees will receive a free copy of the book. Additional copies will be available for sale and signature by the author.

For more information, call (202) 671-3121 or email [email protected]. To request a reasonable accommodation for this program, please contact [email protected] or call (202) 727-2142.

Please welcome RANCHO APARTE, a group of young Colombian Pacific musicians who are looking, without compromise, for the root of a music born in the joy of newfound freedom and sadness of having missed a day.

Sound of abozaos, polkas, danzas, rebulú, Contradanzas, Jugas, songs and rhythms that evoke the mother Africa are the mainstay of this group. Rancho Aparte plays clarinet, the copper saxhorn, the tambora, the snare and raizal voice without school. But this is not just a group that rescues the soul of our people, we go beyond: exploring the internal music living like ghosts crouching in the folds of sensation. The group has made young people hear it and understand it and the old generations, enjoy and dance.

This event is made possible and in partnership with Electric Cowbell Productions, Poder del Pueblo, and the Mount Pleasant Library Friends.

This Thursday, August 22nd, starting at 4pm, join us outside the library to meet an all-women skateboarding collective from Cochabamba, Bolivia. The crew has attracted an international following by skateboarding in their grandmothers’ traditional polleras—colorful, layered skirts worn by Indigenous Aymara and Quechua women of the Bolivian highlands.

As part of their group’s mission, Imilla Skate aims to make space for women and girls in skateboarding culture, a world which is still largely male-dominated. Back in Cochabamba, this mission has evolved into a skate school that serves local youth communities. The word imilla, Fernández explained, means “young girl” in Aymara and Quechua, uniting the group’s Indigenous and matriarchal spirit.

As part of the program Imilla Skate will be working with kids and teaching them some of the fundamentals of

Performers: Sara Curruchich with openers Mapuche Rap duo Waikil and Ketrafe

3200 Mt Pleasant St NW, Washington, DC 20010, United States

Sara Curruchich returns to Mt Pleasant, she played an electrifying concert at the Mt Pleasant library in February. She is an author, composer, and performer, Sara Curruchich finds inspiration in her Maya culture, composing in her native language, Kaqchikel, and in Spanish. Her band, which includes the signature Guatemalan instrument, marimba, subtly mixes folk, rock sounds, and Indigenous Maya influences. Through her songs, she weaves stories of resistance and love, carrying a message that transcends borders and resonates with the diversity of human experiences.
Jaime Cuyanao Venegas is a Mapuche artist who, under the name of Waikil, makes rap music in Spanish and Mapuzungun (Mapuche language). Living in Santiago, he strengthened his Mapuche identity and, through music, shared the everyday experiences of his people in both rural and urban spaces. He is accompanied by one of his bandmates, Cristofer Collio (guitar and pifilka), who goes by Ketrafe.
