The Way of the Cross with John Paul II by Fr. Herbert Niba is the fruit of several years of reflection on the life of St. John Paul II in the context of both personal spiritual reading and classroom teaching. Its purpose is to give a new touch to this devotion and to inspire more persons to follow Christ using the life and witness of a man who himself prayed this prayer every Friday of his life. Day 4: Novena to St. Joseph!
--
Prayer: Saint Joseph, with you, for you, we bless the Lord. He chose you among all men to be the chaste spouse of Mary, the one who would remain at the threshold of the mystery of her divine maternity, and who, after her, would accept it in faith as the work of the Holy Spirit.

You gave to Jesus legal paternity in the line of David. You constantly watched over the Mother and the Child with an affectionate concern, in order to protect their lives and to allow them to accomplish their destiny.

The Savior Jesus deigned to submit himself to you, as to a father, throughout his childhood and adolescence and to receive from you an apprenticeship in human life, while you shared his life in the adoration of his mystery.

You remain at his side. Continue to protect the whole church, the family born of the salvation of Jesus. See the spiritual and material needs of all those who beg your intercession, particularly families and those who are poor, in every sense; through you, they are certain to find Mary’s maternal face and the hand of Jesus to assist them. Amen.

March 19, 7pm: Come join us on the Solemnity of St. Joseph for a talk on the Holy Shroud. James Naulty, noted Shroud expert, has studied this precious image for almost 30 years. On the first Sunday of Lent, the Church invites us to begin our journey of conversion by asking for forgiveness and forgiving those who have hurt us. During the Great Jubilee Year 2000, John Paul II led the entire Church in a “Day of Pardon,” asking forgiveness for the sins committed by members of the Church and calling for forgiveness for those who have been persecuted, especially the thousands of Christians who have died for our faith.

Together with this great Pope, we ask Mary, our Mother of mercy and forgiveness, to help us “accept the grace of forgiveness which [this] Jubilee generously offers us. May She help us make this Lent an acceptable time, a time of reconciliation, a time of salvation for all who are searching for God!”— JPII, Day of Pardon, 3/12/00

Today, in JPII History, we mark the installation of Karol Wojtyła as Archbishop of Kraków, “the seventy-sixth bishop in an episcopal line reaching back to Poland’s origins in the kingdom of the Piasts.” Papal biographer George Weigel notes the pastoral desire of the young archbishop, namely that his flock “show increased zeal and increased readiness in carrying out the eternal program of God and Christ and adapting it to the needs of [the] day.” With this key mission, the young prelate would later issue “Sources of Renewal,” a critical text for the interpretation and implementation of the teachings of Vatican II.

“I want to awaken the Archdiocese of Kraków to the true meaning of the Council, so that we may bring its teaching in our lives.”
