One Virginia Beach woman took couponing to the extreme. She created over $31 million in fake coupons - offering huge discounts - and sold them online for a profit.

Here's how Postal Inspectors and FBI agents cracked this coupon fraud scheme.

March 13, 1920 – James J. Casey is arrested in New York City for using the mail to defraud investors of over $50,000 in a pig raising scheme known as the Associated Swine Breeders, Inc. Casey’s partner, Douglas H. Riker, had already been arrested days earlier.

Also known as the Sterling Hog Raising Colony, Casey and Riker claimed to own an 80-acre farm in Santa Clara, CA that was stocked with pigs. The pair advertised and sold shares in the farm, offering investors 75 percent of the profits. Casey served as treasurer, while Riker was listed as the president of the company.

After receiving numerous complaints, Postal Inspectors launched an investigation. They discovered that Casey and Riker did not own the land, and there were few pigs on the property. After the fraud was discovered, Riker emptied the bank accounts, destroyed the financial records, and left town.

Inspectors pursued Riker to Kansas City, MO, where he was arrested several months later. After initially staying in California and cooperating with the investigation, Casey also fled town. He was eventually located and arrested in New York.

While Casey never went to trial for the fraud scheme, Riker was found guilty of using the mail to commit fraud, and he was sentenced to prison in December 1921.
