👧🏾 While incarcerated I wasn't able to see my children from 2009-2016, I rarely received photos and some years I didn't know what they looked like or how tall they were. My heart broke and I've spent the last 7 years trying to repair our bond. 👦🏽It is a very tough situation to heal through with my 3 young adult children. 👧🏾There are situations way worse than mine. My children were with family and I had some peace knowing that they were ok. Some moms didn't even know where to look for their children. The state had stepped in and you can't get through to government offices on pre paid jail phones. 👦🏽My mission is aid the incarcerated, returning citizens and their children in maintaining contact, gaining parenting skills, communicating effectively while developing a healthy bond between parent and child. 👧🏾I don't wish the pain I feel on anyone. I was honored to speak at DC Mayor Bowsers Office of Returning Citizens Affairs Many Faces of a Female Boss event. The room was brought to tears as I explained speaking to my son, then 9 years old, and he asked me if I had to fight in jail. He was so scared for my safety. He swallowed hard before he asked, preparing his little heart and mind for my answer. Luckily I was at Alderson FPC and I didn’t have to fight. I heard the relief in his voice. For months he wondered if someone was taking my cookies, literally and figuratively! My heart broke knowing that I had caused so much distress in his little life. But that was only the beginning of my 120 month sentence journey. One thing that I learned is that when dealing with the incarceration of a parent honesty is the best policy, the age and intellect of the child should always be considered but keeping the truth from a child will only bite you in the end. During my 120 month federally subsidized vacation, I became a licensed cosmetologist and certified personal trainer. I took every class, some 2 and 3 times to try and forget how much I missed my children. Almost every woman pictured left a child or multiple children behind.
Some were codefendants with their child's father, which displaced the child. Imagine how devastating that must've been for all involved.
