When President Biden took office, the number of drug overdose deaths was increasing by more than 30% year over year. Because of increased funding and resources, overdose deaths decreased 17% year-over-year in the 12 months ending in July 2024.

Our Administration took critical steps to achieve this decrease – including seizing more fentanyl at the border, arresting and prosecuting dozens of high-level drug traffickers and cartel leaders, sanctioning over 300 entities and individuals involved in the global illicit drug trade, and forging historic counternarcotics cooperation with China.

Our Administration also expanded access to naloxone and other life-saving interventions, including working with Congress to remove barriers that prevented medical professionals from prescribing treatment for opioid use disorder.

Big News: 15 more drugs have been selected for Medicare price negotiation under .

Our Administration completed the first round of negotiations last year and delivered dramatic savings, slashing the price of some most commonly used drugs in Medicare by about 40% to 80%.

Today, I’m proud to announce that my Administration has selected the next 15 drugs for Medicare drug price negotiation. The drugs treat conditions such as diabetes and cancer, and seniors across the country rely on them. These 15 drugs, together with the 10 drugs that Medicare already negotiated, represent about a third of Medicare Part D spending on prescription drugs, which means the lower prices my Inflation Reduction Act is delivering will put money back in seniors’ pockets across the country.

My Administration completed the first round of price negotiation last year and delivered dramatic savings, slashing the price of some of the most commonly used drugs in Medicare by about 40 to 80 percent. The Inflation Reduction Act put the country on a path to lower drug prices. I’m proud of my Administration’s implementation of this law to deliver lower prices for America’s seniors.

President Biden believes that artificial intelligence is one of the most powerful tools of our time – but knows that to seize its opportunities, we must first mitigate its risks.

In 2023, President Biden issued a sweeping Executive Order on AI to ensure that America leads the way toward responsible AI innovation. The Executive Order takes a comprehensive approach to America’s global leadership in AI, encourages responsible innovation, and promotes competition. It also ensures that as new technologies rapidly evolve, the government continues to protect Americans’ privacy, advance equity and civil rights, and stand up for consumers, patients, students, and workers.

Additionally, thanks to President Biden’s leadership, 16 companies have made voluntary commitments on safe and responsible AI use. These commitments include internal and external security testing before releasing AI systems, sharing information with the public about safety risks and dangerous capabilities, and deploying AI to help address society’s greatest challenges.
