As we celebrate National Women's History Month we'd like to reflect on our department's efforts to on women's roles as Law Enforcement Officers.

In February 2021, the Urbandale Police Department joined the national 30x30 Initiative. The 30×30 Initiative is a coalition of police leaders, researchers, and professional organizations who have joined together to advance the representation and experiences of women in all ranks of policing across the United States.
Upon joining the initiative, the Urbandale Police Department's percentage of female officers was about 15%, just over the national average of 12%. 4 years later, our efforts have increased that number to 25.5% and we're not done yet!

We value our female officers and the unique qualities they bring to this profession. Our efforts will continue with the ultimate goal of increasing the representation of women in law enforcement and ensuring our policies and culture intentionally support the success of qualified women officers throughout their careers here at the Urbandale Police Department.

A few weeks ago, two suspects burglarized an Urbandale business while driving a stolen vehicle. After the car got stuck in the snow, officers took a burglary report, discovering the suspects were involved in other crimes earlier that day in Des Moines.

Detectives Waalk and Sgt. Flattery launched an investigation using surveillance, eventually identifying a suspect through investigative leads. A search warrant led to a confession, and charges were filed against both suspects.

Their dedication and hard work led to the successful resolution of this case. Great job, Detectives Waalk, and Sgt. Flattery!
