We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of local filmmaker and community partner Della Chen. Before her passing, there were plans to screen at the Library her documentary "She Marches in Chinatown," which tells the story of the Seattle Chinese Community Girls Drill Team. We still hope to do so in the future. You can learn more about the documentary in this article: https://southseattleemerald.org/arts-culture/2023/10/17/she-marches-in-chinatown-tells-the-story-of-a-seattle-drill-team-unlike-any-other-in-the-world

Our thoughts are with Della's family and friends, and to everyone who she impacted through her filmmaking and community involvement.

After working with other general contractors when her basement flooded, Tameka Lamar and her husband decided to start their own company, J J Freemann Construction & Painting.

"At first we thought, 'oh we can do this,'" she said. "Easier said than done!" So where can Seattle-area entrepreneurs go for help when they're starting out?

In our first edition of SPL Small Business Tips, Tameka shares two resources that have helped on her journey as a first-time small business owner!

1️⃣ Bobe.wa provides education and networking for Black business owners across Washington State. Their annual Symposium happens on Feb. 1 to kick off Black History Month, and they also host virtual Tribe Vibe meetings and other events throughout the year.

2️⃣ The Seattle Public Library has market research tools, business plan handbooks and more to support your small business. Additionally, we have Drop In and CoLab with Denkyem Coop and SPL at the Beacon Hill Branch - a collaborative co-working space designed for Black business owners. This program is a supportive space for business owners to get all types of business research support from a SPL business research librarian and cohesive business strategy support from Denkyem, or to bounce ideas off of like minded entrepreneurs!

"If poetry units in classrooms made the art form feel inaccessible, this book aims to flip the script."

Thanks to the Seattle Times for writing about this year's Seattle Reads selection: "You Are Here: Poetry in the Natural World," edited by U.S. Poet Laureate Ada Limón. The book features 50 poets and 50 poems, including local poets Cedar Sigo and Laura Da'. Read the article: https://www.seattletimes.com/entertainment/books/the-seattle-public-library-announces-2025-seattle-reads-pick

In the article, Da' said that she hopes that the Seattle Reads program might encourage people to read more poetry, "and as people read poetry, how might it encourage an openness to (the) ambiguity of thinking about place?"

Find out more about "You Are Here" and how to get your copy (including unlimited copies of the e-audiobook!) at www.spl.org/SeattleReads. We will also have copies available for informal borrowing in March.

📅Mark your calendar! There will be a kickoff event on March 26 at the Central Library, and for Limón's visit to Seattle on May 16 and 17.

This year's book, "You Are Here: Poetry in the Natural World,” features 50 poems by 50 poets from across the country edited by U.S. Poet Laureate Ada Limón.

Five years ago, we eliminated overdue fines forever! This change was overwhelmingly approved by Seattle voters when they voted in the 2019 levy (thank you! 👏).

We made this change because decades of research, as well as our daily experience, showed that late fines discouraged many people from using the Library, including lower-income youth and families, and insecurely housed people. Research has also shown that late fines are not effective at encouraging people to return materials on time.

So: how has no more late fines impacted you? We asked in a recent newsletter, and a number of patrons generously shared their stories. Here are a few that stood out. Read more in our blog post: https://blog.spl.org/2025/02/06/a-huge-load-off-my-shoulders-5-fine-free-years-part-1/

Remember: if you have Library charges and are unable to pay, reach out to us. We will work with you to restore access, because we want everyone we serve to be able to use the Library.

A helpful look at our Library to Business (L2B) team and our resources for entrepreneurs of all ages!

What if the key to launching your business wasn’t in an expensive program or a private consultant—but at your local library? The Seattle Public Library (SPL) has been a hub for entrepreneurs for over a century, offering free resources, expert guidance, and a powerful network of support. "We don’t have a ton of records from those earliest days, but we do still have pieces of the collection from the early 1900s, which make it clear that they were supporting those starting and growing businesses," says Jay Lyman from SPL.

In a new Getting Smart Blog, Mason Pashia explores SPL’s Library to Business (L2B) team, which provides one-on-one business information appointments, market research tools, LinkedIn Learning access, and partnerships with organizations like SCORE Greater Seattle. Libraries aren't just places to check out books—they're engines of innovation, empowering individuals to turn ideas into action: https://www.gettingsmart.com/2025/02/04/your-public-library-is-an-untapped-resource-for-young-entrepreneurs/
