Today, the Seattle City Council took an important step to strengthen public safety in Seattle by adopting my public safety resolution. This resolution reflects our commitment to making our neighborhoods safer, supporting first responders, and ensuring accountability. It also signals a new chapter - moving beyond past divisions to ensure a safer, more united Seattle. It adds to the 14+ public safety bills passes by this Council since many of us took office in January 2024.

Had a great meeting today with Kenny Stuart, Lieutenant with the Seattle Fire Department and President of Seattle Fire Fighters Local 27.

Firefighters play a critical role in keeping our community safe - whether responding to emergencies, providing lifesaving care, or protecting our neighborhoods. I'm proud to support the International Association of Fire Fighters and remain committed to increasing Seattle Fire Department's staffing and recruitment efforts to ensure they have the resources they need.

Grateful for the dedication and service of our first responders! 🧑‍🚒👩‍🚒🔥🚒🚑

Please see below my statement on last night's shooting in West Seattle's Delridge neighborhood.

On Sunday night my family and West Seattle neighbors experienced a terrifying incident. Over a hundred gunshot rounds were fired just outside of my home – practically in my backyard. My 10-year-old daughter was awake at the time and heard everything. After the shooting, I had to wake up my two youngest children for the sole purpose of ensuring that they were safe. It has left my family, my neighbors in Delridge, and many people across our broader West Seattle community feeling traumatized.

No one in Seattle should have to be exposed to this. The sense of safety and peace in our homes and neighborhoods is a fundamental right, and what occurred last night is simply unacceptable.

I want to assure my constituents that I am working closely with the Seattle Police Department as they investigate this incident.

While I’m grateful for the swift response of our Seattle Police officers, it’s clear that we need to do more. My constituents are fed up with the rampant crime and gun violence throughout the city. Certain communities, such as Delridge, continue to bear the brunt of Seattle’s gun violence crisis.

This incident underscores the urgent need for continued and intensified efforts to address gun violence and enhance public safety across our city. I have proposed a public safety resolution up for a vote by the full Council tomorrow, and the Council is also considering a bill to regulate after-hour activities at unregulated clubs that have been sites of regular shootings and violence.

Moving forward, my focus remains on supporting the community and working collaboratively with first responders, local stakeholders, and city leaders to find meaningful solutions that will prevent such incidents from happening again and again.

If you have any information about this incident, I strongly encourage you to call 911, or immediately contact the SPD Violent Crimes Tipline at 206-233-5000.

👉🏾Yesterday I had the pleasure of visiting Sound Foundations Northwest at their Hope Factory in S**O - right here in District 1! 💥

This incredible nonprofit is making a real impact by building tiny homes as a transitional solution to homelessness in Seattle.
👏🏾👏🏾
I'm proud to have helped fund their ability to build more homes through our most recent budget, supporting their mission to provide safe, warm, and dignified shelter to those in need.

A huge thank you to Barb Oliver for hosting us and giving us a tour of the factory.

Let’s continue working together to create more pathways to stable housing!

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending Coffee with a Cop in the High Point neighborhood of West Seattle 👮‍♀️👮‍♂️☕

A big thank you to the Seattle Police Department for hosting this event and to Dr. Ella McRae from the Seattle Housing Authority for providing the space.

“Coffee with a Cop”is all about fostering open, honest dialogue - giving community members a chance to sit down with local officers to talk about a range of topics, outside of crisis or need. It's an important reminder that behind the badge are neighbors, friends, and fellow community members - many of whom live right here in District 1.

It was a valuable opportunity to connect with constituents, local workers, and our police!

📢 Big news for South and Southwest Seattle covering our Council District 1!

👀The expansion of the Department into our neighborhoods is a critical step toward reimagining public safety — one that prioritizes getting people the right help when they need it most.

📍From Highland Park to Georgetown, too many of our neighbors face behavioral health crises without proper support. The CARE team 🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 brings compassionate, specialized responders to meet those challenges head-on — reducing reliance on law enforcement for non-criminal emergencies and freeing up officers to focus on violent crime.

👍🏾I’m proud to support this expansion and the investment in more responders to serve our communities. This is how we build a safer, healthier Seattle — together!

Yesterday, my team and I joined representatives from the Morgan Community Association (MoCA) and Fauntleroy Community Association for a driving tour to hear their thoughts on the Mayor’s proposed One Seattle Comprehensive Plan. It was a valuable opportunity to see and hear firsthand what matters most to these neighborhoods.

I’m committed to making sure every voice is heard — that’s why I’ll continue meeting with community representatives from each of District 1’s neighborhoods over the coming months. I look forward to these important conversations and working together to shape a plan that reflects the needs and priorities of our diverse communities!

🚶‍♂️🌟 Yesterday’s walking tour in West Seattle’s North Delridge with was a powerful reminder of how vital sidewalks and walkways are for our neighborhoods.

☺️ My district 1 has second highest missing sidewalks in the city. I worked hard to prioritize funding for our neighborhoods.

👏🏾A huge thank you to Seattle voters for supporting the 2024 - your vote is making these critical improvements possible! Sidewalks aren’t just about getting from point A to point B - they’re about safer streets, stronger neighborhood connections, and more accessible communities for everyone.

👂It was great to hear directly from you about where new sidewalks are needed most in my own Delridge neighborhood.

Your ideas and insights 👀 will help shape the future of pedestrian infrastructure in our community.

👏🏾Thank you for showing up, sharing your voices!
