Seattle-Perugia Sister City Association Friendship with Perugia, Seattle's Italian Sister City Our association is one of 20 sister city programs supported by the City of Seattle.

For almost 30 years, the Seattle-Perugia Sister City Association has maintained ties of sisterhood and friendship with Perugia, Italy. Located in a region in central Italy between Florence and Rome, Perugia is the administrative, cultural and economic capital of Umbria. The goal of each is to bring grassroots citizen groups and local governments together to promote international understanding, goo

dwill and friendship. To deepen our understanding and bond between Seattle and Perugia, our members offer educational, cultural, commercial and personal exchanges as well as a variety of local activities that focus on Perugia and Italy in general.

Congratulations to the Università per Stranieri di Perugia on its 100th anniversary, commemorated with a visit from Italian President Sergio Mattarella. During the ceremony at Palazzo Gallenga, attended by local authorities, institutional representatives, students, teachers, and administrative staff, Rector Valerio De Cesaris highlighted the university’s extraordinary journey, stating, "No one here is a foreigner; our students are all at home". President Mattarella described the university as "a mirror of the world, where diversity enriches us all", and praised its role in presenting Italy as "a welcoming, open country". This institution remains a beacon of language, diplomacy, and international cooperation, shaping global citizens through education and cultural exchange.

Seattle-Perugia Sister City Association will soon open applications for its 2025 Scholarship Program! From March 1–31, 2025, members can apply for a month-long Italian language study at the renowned Università per Stranieri di Perugia, Italy’s oldest institution dedicated to teaching Italian. Located in the heart of historic Perugia, this immersive experience offers scholars the chance to enhance their language skills while exploring the rich culture, cuisine, and history of this stunning Umbrian city. SPSCA members enjoyed an exclusive All-Italian Solo Piano Concert hosted by Karin McCullough at her home. She performed beautiful classical melodies on her magnificent seven-foot handcrafted Fazioli Grand Piano, her musical treasure after a decade of searching across Switzerland, Italy, United States and Canada. It was an intimate and unforgettable afternoon filled with stunning music, great company, and shared treats. Grazie mille, Karin, for this spectacular experience! 🎵🎹

At the green heart of Italy, this special occasion was filled with meaningful traditions, from the illumination ceremony and Eucharistic celebrations to the vibrant San Costanzo fair and the delicious tasting of the traditional Torcolo bread. Great news! The Seattle Sister Cities Soup Swap at the Polish Home Association was a sold-out hit with over 300 attendees! 🎉
Our Umbrian lentil soup was a crowd favorite, thanks to the amazing teamwork of our member volunteers, board members, and special contributors. A heartfelt Grazie Mille to everyone who helped make and serve soup, you made this event unforgettable!🥣✨

Join us next Saturday, January 18, 1-3pm at the Seattle Sister Cities Association Soup Sampling, a free community event showcasing soups from ten Seattle Sister Cities and representing cultures from four continents!

On January 6, we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany, a day filled with Italian traditions! Legend tells of today's arrival of "La Befana", an elderly woman who brings gifts to good children, or coal to the naughty ones. In Perugia, Epiphany comes alive with numerous events: the Motobefana charity, vintage cars and motorbikes participation and the Befana’s descent from the cathedral bell tower. Celebrations continue with Befana on Skates and a beautiful Epiphany concert by the Pretola Philharmonic at St. Peter’s Basilica. It’s a magical time to visit Perugia, even as the Christmas season closes: “L’Epifania tutte le feste porta via!”.

Our December scholar, Carol Vecchio, is finishing her magical month at Università per Stranieri!✨ While learning Italian, she enjoyed Bella Perugia’s festive holiday charm and studied with classmates from Australia, Brazil, China, India, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Mongolia, the UK, and the US. Carol also joined Voci dal Mondo, the Università’s choir, and performed in their concert last week, a true cultural immersion! SPSCA members with one year of standing can apply for our annual scholarships. Stay tuned early next year for 2025 application dates. Buone Feste!🎄

Enjoy 15 incredible Italian films with English subtitles, featuring thrillers, love stories, a tense submarine saga, and a tribute to one of Italy’s greatest actresses. Watch classics like Antonioni’s "IL Grido", and "Vermiglio", Italy’s 2025 Oscar submission. Special guests include Angelo Acerbi, CIS programmer, Simone Bozzelli, director of "Patagonia", and Alberta Lai, Director of the Italian Cultural Institute in San Francisco.
