SEATTLE โ The Coast Guard rescued two boaters from a disabled and grounded 31-foot sailboat near the San Juan Islands, Wash., Monday night.
Rescue crews rescued a 56-year-old man and recovered a woman who later succumbed to her injuries.
Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound watchstanders received a mayday call via VHF radio from the captain of the sailboat around 7 p.m. stating his sailboat was disabled and drifting toward land. Snowy conditions and 25 to 30 mph winds with 4 to 6-foot seas were reported as the on-scene weather.
The Coast Guard command center launched a rescue boatcrew from Station Bellingham aboard a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium and an aircrew aboard a MH-65E Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Port Angeles to locate the distressed vessel.
As Coast Guard crews were attempting the rescue, the sailboat ran aground. After the mast of the vessel collapsed, the aircrew was able to lower the rescue swimmer to reach the individuals.
After the rescue swimmer retrieved the man and he was hoisted to the rescue boat, the helicopter crew located the woman in the water and guided the boatcrew to her location. The woman was recovered unconscious by the boatcrew and brought aboard where a crew member immediately began CPR.
The woman was hoisted to the helicopter and flown to St. Joesph Medical Center in Bellingham. She was later declared deceased by hospital personnel.
The man was taken by the boatcrew to Station Bellingham where he was transferred to EMS who then took him to St. Joesph Medical Center.
A Coast Guard member injured during the rescue was transported to the hospital for evaluation and released later that night.

Another day, another rescue by U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Port Angeles!
Yesterday, watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound received a request from a partner agency to assist with a medevac of a man from a remote part of the Hoh Valley near Olympic National Park.
The man had fallen down a hill and suffered several injuries. EMS and Life Flight were on scene but they were unable to recover the patient without hoist capabilities.
Clallam County requested the U.S. Coast Guard aircrew to assist with the hoist.
After the Dolphin helicopter crew safely hoisted the man, they landed on a nearby logging road and transferred the man to a waiting Life Flight Network helicopter. The man was then flown to Harborview Medical Center.

Camano Island Rescue of 3 People
Bravo Zulu to Coast Guard Air Station Port Angeles!
On Saturday, an aircrew rescued three people, including one child, from their grounded boat off the south end of Camano Island.
Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound dispatched the helicopter crew due to the steep terrain the people were next to and the inability for the local fire department to access them.
The 12-year-old boy was hoisted first and taken to Paine Field Airport where he was seen by a local EMS crew. The helicopter quickly refueled and then headed back to the scene to safely hoist the remaining two adults and the rescue swimmer. The two individuals were also taken to Paine to be seen by EMS.
Great work to all involved!

On Sunday, an aircrew from U.S. Coast Guard Air Station North Bend rescued a missing 64-year-old woman from Shore Acres State Park in Oregon following a multi-day search.
Multiple partner agencies including the Coos County Sheriff's Office, Oregon State Police, Jackson County Oregon USA, and Oregon Department of Emergency Management coordinated efforts to ensure search parties saturated the area.
The woman had been missing since Friday evening after separating from the party she was foraging with.
A flight crew from U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Astoria aboard a helicopter equipped with a Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) camera was also utilized. However, the woman was hiding under a log during these searches which prevented the crew from seeing any heat signatures.
Once the ground parties located the woman on Sunday afternoon, the U.S. Coast Guard aircrew was requested to expedite the transfer of her to Bay Area Hospital in North Bend where she was seen by EMS.

SEATTLE โ The Coast Guard rescued five people from the 130-foot commercial tug Luther after it lost steering off the coast of La Push, Washington, Friday afternoon.
At 4:10 p.m., the tug lost steering and was beset by weather while towing a concrete barge 10 miles off the coast of La Push and requested assistance from the Coast Guard. A 47-foot Motor Lifeboat (MLB) crew from U.S. Coast Guard Station Quillayute River, U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Astoria, and the emergency response tug M/V Lauren Foss were launched to assist the distressed vessel.
The M/V Luther began taking on water and the crew disconnected from the barge due to the weather conditions. Once disconnected, the M/V Luther was able to stabilize and stay afloat while they prepared for a tow from the M/V Lauren Foss.
While the tow was being set up, the adrift barge came close to the M/V Luther and threatened to collide and all crew members were transferred to the 47-foot MLB.
During the transfer, one crew member fell into the water and was retrieved by 47-foot MLB crew. Station Quillayute River transferred a crew member onto the M/V Luther and the M/V Lauren Foss attempted a tow, but was unable to complete it after a line fouled in one of the M/V Lauren Fossโs props and they had to return to safe harbor.
After the first tow was unsuccessful, the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Atlantic Raven, an ocean-going tug, arrived on scene along with US Coast Guard Station Neah Bay and U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Port Angeles.
The crews were able to establish a tow and prevent the M/V Luther from running aground while only 1 mile from shore. The Luther was taken to Port Angeles and no injuries were reported. On scene weather conditions were 10โ14-foot seas and 45-kts winds.
