“We empathize with and acknowledge the challenges for the governor and legislature, and yet we urge them to prioritize the needs of our residents of Washington who have the fewest resources and the greatest needs,” said Gordon McHenry, Jr., United Way of King County President and CEO.

Last week, federal officials stopped funding for the federal Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) and the Local Food Purchase Assistance Program (LFPA), cutting critical support services, such as food, lodging, rental assistance, and utility payment assistance.

These disruptions in funding are a direct attack on programs that support basic needs. They disproportionately affect at-risk communities. Farmers, children, and your next-door neighbors deserve better. 💯

Join us in urging members of Congress to support our neighbors in need by restoring funding for these programs.

📫 Did you know that since post-slavery, Black people have been an integral part of USPS, dating back to the late 1860s? Black people served as postmasters, clerks, and city letter carriers. As of 2022, around 30% of USPS workers are of Black/African descent.

🚃 Another popular occupation Black people were employed as were pullman porters. During the Jim Crow era, this job paid more than most alternative options. Pullman porters worked on sleeping cars (railway passenger cars) and assisted with luggage, serving passengers, and maintaining sleeping quarters.

🏫🩺 Nowadays, 29% of Black people work in education and health services.
