Walk Run Thrive 2024 Event Kickoff
We’re excited to officially kick off #WalkRunThrive 2024 with this message from National CASA/GAL Board of Trustees member Emma Ludbrook! Be sure to tag @NationalCASAGAL in your event photos and spread the word about why you support CASA/GAL programs and volunteers with #WalkRunThrive. Thank you for joining us in this nationwide movement!
A new school year can be daunting for any child, but especially for children and youth who are involved in judicial proceedings related to abuse or neglect. A new school year may include transitioning to a new school or home. CASA/GAL volunteers advocate for stability and continuity in a child’s education. National CASA/GAL had a special connection to Congressman John Lewis through his longtime support of our work for the nation’s most vulnerable children. The same tenacity that he applied to fighting for social justice for those who are disenfranchised he applied to supporting issues related to improving the lives of children and families.
Congressman Lewis’ fight for equality, and the never-ending fight against social injustice, intersected with the issues that disproportionately impact children who have experienced abuse and neglect. He was an ardent supporter of causes for the children we serve, and regularly used his voice to advocate for important issues, programs and funding.

We celebrate Judge Ernestine S. Gray (Retired), a longtime advocate for children and families and the first Black Board Chair of National CASA/GAL. Throughout her work, she has focused on keeping children and families together, and she has been an advocate for the development of life skills to deter youth from crime. Her impact has been felt in the child welfare and juvenile justice systems nationally, and certainly by the children and families in her courtroom.

We honor Dr. William C. Bell, President and Chief Executive Officer of Casey Family Programs since 2006, and former National CASA/GAL Board Chair. Dr. Bell has spent a highly decorated career advocating for change in the child welfare system. Using a racial equity lens to examine ways we can reduce the number of children in foster care, Dr. Bell’s current work focuses on finding the threads communities can weave together to offer a safety net of services that will help families become more resilient.

September is National Kinship Care Month. When parents are unable to care for their children, relatives or family friends may step into a full-time caregiving role, which is called kinship care.
According to the American Bar Association, research shows that kinship care is better for children, youth, and families, because it minimizes trauma, improves behavioral and mental health outcomes and promotes sibling and relative ties.

Children can have mixed feelings about going back to school. Some students will be excited, while others can feel anxious. A child or youth in foster care may have additional challenges and concerns. CASA/GAL volunteers get to know each child so they can address their concerns and advocate for them at home and at school.

Children and youth assigned a CASA/GAL volunteer have significantly higher levels of hope. A child’s hope has been linked to numerous positive outcomes such as academic success, overall well-being, increases in self-control, positive social relationships and optimism.

Happy Mother’s Day to all moms and mother-figures! No two moms or families are alike, and there is beauty in their differences. We see you and celebrate you! 💐 #HappyMothersDay
Happy Grandparents Day! Every day, millions of grandparents provide kinship care for their grandchildren, grandnieces and grandnephews. These families are sometimes called “grandfamilies” and are an important part of keeping children and youth connected to their families, cultures and communities.
