New Horizons

New Horizons New Horizons helps end youth homelessness,
one young person at a time. Young adult homelessness is a forgotten issue populated by forgotten persons.

Every night in King County, more than 1,500 young people are uncertain where they'll be able to sleep. As many housing resources and organizations have turned their attention to other homeless populations, young people on the streets have found fewer and fewer resources available to address their specific needs. The causes of homelessness among Seattle’s young adults are multifaceted. Forty percen

t of the homeless young adult population have aged out of the foster care system, while around 40% in Seattle identify as LGBTQ+ and have experienced relational disconnection as a result. Some are fleeing abusive situations and have nowhere to turn but the streets. Simply put, one of the main causes of youth homelessness is disconnection. We seek to be a place of reconnection for those who've been separated from positive relationships and opportunity. Through our Drop-In Center, we offer services to meet young people's basic needs, like hot meals, showers, clothing, laundry service, and more. No one can dream of a better future on an empty stomach. No one can think about job applications when they're worried about where they'll sleep that night. By having a place to get basic needs met, and experience the concrete support of case management, young people are able to find the safety, stability, and resources to begin processing what their next move should be. Meeting these basic needs provides the privilege and opportunity to develop positive relationships. New Horizons offers job training opportunities through our apprenticeship program that offers job training skills like barista training through our partners at Street Bean Coffee. Apprentices learn real-world job experience and the opportunity to develop the soft skills necessary for future employment. New Horizons operates a 30-bed, low-barrier shelter, called The Nest, providing safety and stability each night. In 2022, New Horizons transitioned all beds into private rooms to honor our young clients as individuals who have experienced trauma. We recognize that each of these young people are empowered with tremendous persistence, resilience, and grit, endowed with unique gifts and creative talents, and through healthy, mentoring relationships and case management services, we assure them of their dignity and support their journey into sustainable independence. By setting expectations and following up with each individual, we support responsibility and accountability, and help these young people discover that they are strong and capable of achieving their dreams.

New Horizons' approach to supporting young people includes finding ways to support each unique individual who comes through our doors. Individualized care can look like meeting off-site, one-on-one resumé building appointments, and creating new weekly clubs to tap into a young person's creativity! These are just some of the many ways New Horizons believes in supporting young people as humans first. 💓

When we re-designed our shelter last year, it was also our goal to create a Day Programming space that felt more welcoming and warmer. The new furniture, windows, and paint have all contributed to make the space feel that much more like a temporary home for young adults.

Yesterday was Rob's last day at New Horizons after serving as our Executive Director for SEVEN years!

It is not an exaggeration to say we could not have asked for a more helpful, grounding, and utterly ridiculous (in the best way) leader through the many ups and downs of the last seven years. We will miss conferring with him on big issues and small moments, forcing him to listen to compliments about the work he has done, and having a stable leader when everything else has often felt completely uncertain.

While we are excited for what is ahead, one thing is for sure: Rob has left a permanent mark on our organization, the young people coming through our doors, our ever-grateful staff, and our incredible community. ❣️

IT'S BLACK HISTORY MONTH!

30% of the young people who accessed our services in 2024 identified as Black, African American, or African.

Existing as a human services organization means experiencing first-hand the reality that Black, Africa, and African American young people walk through our doors at a disproportionate rate to the overall population of King County.

Our Story

Every night in King County, nearly 1,500 young people are uncertain where (or if) they'll sleep.

We seek to be a place of reconnection for those who've been separated from positive relationships and opportunity. Youth homelessness is a forgotten issue populated by forgotten persons. As many housing resources and organizations have turned their attention to other homeless populations, young people on the streets have found fewer and fewer resources available to address their specific needs.

WHY DO YOUTH BECOME HOMELESS?

The causes of homelessness among Seattle’s young adults are multifaceted. The overwhelming majority of homeless young adults are exiting directly from systems of care onto the streets: foster care, behavioral health facilities and the juvenile justice system. These systems, designed to provide ongoing support, often leave youth vulnerable, disconnected and facing complex futures.
