New Horizons helps end youth homelessness,
one young person at a time. Young adult homelessness is a forgotten issue populated by forgotten persons.
Every night in King County, more than 1,500 young people are uncertain where they'll be able to sleep. As many housing resources and organizations have turned their attention to other homeless populations, young people on the streets have found fewer and fewer resources available to address their specific needs. The causes of homelessness among Seattle’s young adults are multifaceted. Forty percen
t of the homeless young adult population have aged out of the foster care system, while around 40% in Seattle identify as LGBTQ+ and have experienced relational disconnection as a result. Some are fleeing abusive situations and have nowhere to turn but the streets. Simply put, one of the main causes of youth homelessness is disconnection. We seek to be a place of reconnection for those who've been separated from positive relationships and opportunity. Through our Drop-In Center, we offer services to meet young people's basic needs, like hot meals, showers, clothing, laundry service, and more. No one can dream of a better future on an empty stomach. No one can think about job applications when they're worried about where they'll sleep that night. By having a place to get basic needs met, and experience the concrete support of case management, young people are able to find the safety, stability, and resources to begin processing what their next move should be. Meeting these basic needs provides the privilege and opportunity to develop positive relationships. New Horizons offers job training opportunities through our apprenticeship program that offers job training skills like barista training through our partners at Street Bean Coffee. Apprentices learn real-world job experience and the opportunity to develop the soft skills necessary for future employment. New Horizons operates a 30-bed, low-barrier shelter, called The Nest, providing safety and stability each night. In 2022, New Horizons transitioned all beds into private rooms to honor our young clients as individuals who have experienced trauma. We recognize that each of these young people are empowered with tremendous persistence, resilience, and grit, endowed with unique gifts and creative talents, and through healthy, mentoring relationships and case management services, we assure them of their dignity and support their journey into sustainable independence. By setting expectations and following up with each individual, we support responsibility and accountability, and help these young people discover that they are strong and capable of achieving their dreams.

Happy Monday! It is a great day to help young people get housed!

New Horizons' approach to supporting young people includes finding ways to support each unique individual who comes through our doors. Individualized care can look like meeting off-site, one-on-one resumé building appointments, and creating new weekly clubs to tap into a young person's creativity! These are just some of the many ways New Horizons believes in supporting young people as humans first. 💓

When the weather is unpredictable, young people experiencing homelessness still have to face the cold. By supporting New Horizons, you are supporting one of the few trauma-informed spaces in Seattle that young people can go to be warm and safe!

Let's remember to rest and spread kindness this weekend. 💓

When we re-designed our shelter last year, it was also our goal to create a Day Programming space that felt more welcoming and warmer. The new furniture, windows, and paint have all contributed to make the space feel that much more like a temporary home for young adults.

Yesterday was Rob's last day at New Horizons after serving as our Executive Director for SEVEN years!
It is not an exaggeration to say we could not have asked for a more helpful, grounding, and utterly ridiculous (in the best way) leader through the many ups and downs of the last seven years. We will miss conferring with him on big issues and small moments, forcing him to listen to compliments about the work he has done, and having a stable leader when everything else has often felt completely uncertain.
While we are excited for what is ahead, one thing is for sure: Rob has left a permanent mark on our organization, the young people coming through our doors, our ever-grateful staff, and our incredible community. ❣️

IT'S BLACK HISTORY MONTH!
30% of the young people who accessed our services in 2024 identified as Black, African American, or African.
Existing as a human services organization means experiencing first-hand the reality that Black, Africa, and African American young people walk through our doors at a disproportionate rate to the overall population of King County.

Recently, LIONSCOVE came through Day Program to provide a baked potato bar! Not only was it delicious, it was also a wonderful new connection with our community.

In 2024, our 35-bed shelter was at utilization 87% of the time, meaning 9,000 individual beds were filled! That is 9,000 individual nights of rest, warmth, and safety (and just as much laundry!)

🎊WE LOVE MOVE-IN DAYS! 🎊
When young people get the keys to their new apartment and go with their case managers to get settled into the home they have been working towards, it makes every obstacle worth it!

Every Wednesday, young people can connect with NeighborCare, a health clinic that provides much-needed support for medication, standard check ups, and whatever else our clients need! We are so thankful for their support! 🙌

Every month we add keys to this board to signify each young person we helped move into a place of their own! While we provide support, it's the young people's resilience and hope that makes it all possible. We're so proud and honored to be a part of their journey!
Public bathrooms, parking garages, and storefronts should not be beds for young adults. When we fill up at night, we are telling someone standing at our door that they will need to find somewhere on the cold, rainy, and dangerous streets to sleep.
Help us reach our $80,000 goal this month so that we don't have to turn anymore young people away. We need you to make that a reality. Give at the link in our bio.
Thanks to Pattison General Contractor and a generous anonymous donor, $40,000 will be matched dollar-for-dollar.
Thank You!!
For every prayer, donation, meal, and hour volunteered. We simply could not do it without you. Thank you from all of us at New Horizons. 💘🥰

When did you come to Seattle?
Whether our youth are local or have moved from somewhere else, we are here to help change their lives. ✨
Every night in King County, nearly 1,500 young people are uncertain where (or if) they'll sleep.
We seek to be a place of reconnection for those who've been separated from positive relationships and opportunity.
Youth homelessness is a forgotten issue populated by forgotten persons. As many housing resources and organizations have turned their attention to other homeless populations, young people on the streets have found fewer and fewer resources available to address their specific needs.
WHY DO YOUTH BECOME HOMELESS?
The causes of homelessness among Seattle’s young adults are multifaceted. The overwhelming majority of homeless young adults are exiting directly from systems of care onto the streets: foster care, behavioral health facilities and the juvenile justice system. These systems, designed to provide ongoing support, often leave youth vulnerable, disconnected and facing complex futures.
Youth on the streets are disproportionately youth of color and nearly 40% identify as LGBTQ and have experienced relational disconnection as a result. Some are fleeing abusive situations and have nowhere to turn but the streets.
Simply put, one might say the primary cause of youth homelessness is disconnection.
WHAT DOES NEW HORIZONS DO?
We meet youth where they are
Through our Drop-In Center, we offer services to meet young people's basic needs, like hot meals, showers, clothing, laundry service, medical care, vet care, housing connection, employment support and case management.
Meeting these basic needs provides the privilege and opportunity to develop positive relationships.
We offer a place to sleep.
We operate a 15-bed transitional shelter, known as The Nest, a secure place for our cities most vulnerable youth.
As of February 2016, we offer 30 secure beds to young people looking to come inside and connect with supportive services.
We connect youth to permanent and stable housing.
Case managers, Housing Navigators and our Diversion team work one-on-one with youth to help them set and meet their individuals housing goals. We are able to use flexible assistance to remove traditional barriers to housing, and secure a stable place for youth to call home.
We provide employment support.
Our Youth Employment Program offers youth the chance to learn to work in a safe, supportive environment. Through our Apprenticeship program and our Social Enterpreise Street Bean Coffee Roasters, we provide paid apprenticeships to build the necessary skills and confidence for future employment.
We work with youth to prepare them for long-term employment through our weekly Leadership Institute, which focuses on financial literacy, job readiness and self-confidence.
Our Employment Navigators create local partnerships that create job placements opportunities throughout our community.
We serve the most resilient, passionate, daring and powerful youth in the city, and believe alongside of them, that they are capable of achieving their dreams.
