Post Election Thoughts:
Hello everyone -
It wouldn’t do any good for me to try to downplay what happened on Tuesday night. It was a s***show. Despite the many failings and shortcomings of his character and previous administration, Donald J. Trump will once again be our President for the next 4 years. I commend Vice President Harris and Governor Walz for the campaign they ran, but the people have made their choice. Whether it was because of backlash from inflation, an unfavorable media environment, or people simply desiring a change of any kind, the outcome is the same. We will now be living under a fully GOP controlled federal government for at least the next 2 years, with Trump at the helm.
I first got involved in politics in 2016. I was a naive, scrappy UND student who decided to take a field organizing job with the Dem-NPL in Grand Forks. I certainly didn’t expect Hillary Clinton to win North Dakota or anything, but the size of the Trump wave, and its effect on many local Dem-NPL legislative incumbents was devastating. In the despair of loss, a fire was lit under me, just like I’m sure it was for many of you, to never lose like that again. To never have to feel that same kind of shame and regret again. Speaking for myself, this election loss has felt especially difficult, because 8 years after my first election, it feels like I’m right back where I started - staring the down the barrel of a Trump trifecta and living in a state overwhelmingly dominated by a political party whose elected officials seem to experience no repercussions no matter the depth of depravity they exhibit in their conduct.
This is not easy. I don’t know what the correct path forward is - but I at least know that we need to still move forward. It will take a lot of reflection and honest discussion, but this is not the end. We have a history to be proud of in the Dem-NPL. We’ll always stand up for the values of equality, justice, and opportunity for every American. This election did not go our way, but the next one is only two years away. A functioning democracy needs a strong second party, and if there’s any bright spot to be found in Tuesday’s results, it’s that Trump and the Republicans will now have to live with the consequences of their campaign. Winning the election was the easy part, now they have to do the exceptionally difficult task of actually running the country, and if Trump’s first term is any indication, there will be plenty about his performance for voters to be pi**ed off about. The GOP has no way to scapegoat the Democrats anymore, they will own all of their mistakes.
We’ll still be here. They can’t get rid of us that easily.
To everyone who supported our party in this election, you have my sincerest thanks.
A special thank you to Lisa Hermosillo and Alexandra Deufel for standing up to try and give Minot political representation that centered thoughtfulness and compassion. They both ran amazing campaigns and deserve the utmost respect for having the courage to put their names on the ballot.
A special thank you as well to Trygve Hammer for stepping up and running a hard campaign to offer North Dakotans a chance to send a true working class representative to Congress. Whatever the reasons for the Dem-NPL’s loss in this election, it was not because of a lack of candidate quality.
To all the people who’ve volunteered your time and effort in helping the Souris Valley Dem-NPL and our candidates this election, thank you so much for everything. I know it feels difficult now, but even in defeat, it’s better to stand up tall for our values and know that we did what we could to fight for what’s right, rather than let cruelty and hatred go unopposed.
We’ll have a lot to talk about in our next meeting about the next steps after this election. I hope to see as many of you there as possible.
Respectfully yours,
Logan Longtin
