The Pacific Islands Development Program (PIDP) kicked off the “Bridging Our Oceans: Conversations to Connect the Pacific Islands and America” series with “A Conversation with Representatives of the U.S. Congressional Pacific Islands Caucus.” PIPD Director Dr. Mary Therese Perez Hattori and East-West Center President Dr. Jim Scott welcomed Honorable Congressman Ed Case and Congressman Ami Bera as co-Chairs of the Pacific Islands Caucus as the event’s featured guests. Facilitated by Dr. Line-Noue Memea Kruse, the event featured frank and open dialogue between the Congressmen and Members of the Pacific Islands Conference Leaders (PICL) and colleagues from Council of Regional Organisations of the Pacific (CROP) agencies, focused on current and projected impacts on the Pacific Islands arising from matters emerging at the U.S. national level.

The Bridging Our Ocean series will provide a platform for U.S. and Pacific stakeholders to engage in dialogue on critical issues related to U.S.-Pacific Islands relations. Be on the look out for our next virtual conversation!

A big thank you to our contributing sponsor, AlohaCare, for their generous support of the Celebrate Micronesia Festival (CMF)!

AlohaCare is a community-led, nonprofit health plan that has served QUEST members since 1994, when the program began. The nonprofit services over 71,500 members statewide and is the second largest Medicaid/Medicare health plan in Hawaiʻi. AlohaCare works closely with providers and other nonprofit organizations to encourage health and wellness for all communities.

We would also like to honor and remember CJ Johnson, a beloved advocate for AlohaCare, who was the face of their booth at CMF year after year. CJ's unwavering support, kind spirit, and dedication to both AlohaCare and CMF will never be forgotten.

While we are saddened by Amber leaving the Pacific Islands Development Program, we are excited as she pursues her artistic passions! Amber has been selected as a Wahi Pana: Storied Places artist for the City and County of Honolulu! Eleven local artists were selected for this prestigious honor to celebrate cultural and historic sites across O'ahu.

Honolulu was one of just eight US cities awarded the Bloomberg Philanthropies Public Art Challenge grant to address civic issues in their communities.

Wahi Pana will include eleven artistic installations that use diverse forms of creative storytelling, including sculpture, video, photography, poetry, painting, and mele (music). Native Hawaiian and Hawai‘i-based artists are commissioned to work with storytellers and community members to research and create site-specific artworks and performances that highlight the rich histories of each location. These installations will invite residents and visitors to engage deeply with Oahu’s unique heritage, enhancing historical and cultural awareness and fostering meaningful connections to Hawai‘i and its people.

Her site will be located at Hale'iwa Beach Park with a scheduled completion date of September 2025. Follow us for updates as her work progresses!
