World Lymphedema Awareness Day
Each year Tripler Army Medical Center recognizes World Lymphedema Awareness Day on March 6. Lymphedema is a condition in which high protein swelling occurs when lymph nodes are removed or when there is trauma or impairment to the lymphatic system.
World Lymphedema Awareness Day gives all those involved in the care of lymphedema, including healthcare providers and patients, an opportunity to break down barriers.
Here at Tripler Army Medical Center, Ms. Eileen Itamoto-Gaza is an Occupational Therapist with a national board certification in lymphedema and offers specialized lymphedema rehabilitation services.
“It’s important to know that every patient has a custom-designed rehabilitation program to meet their individual needs, personal goals, and to address their specific swelling issues,” Itamoto-Gaza said. “The goal is to improve the patient’s quality of life by empowering them through self-management techniques.”
Itamoto-Gaza said continues to be inspired by all her patients who exhibit human resilience, strength, and courage to overcome barriers.
