April is Tsunami awareness month!

🌊 What is Tsunami Awareness Month?

Every April, we observe Tsunami Awareness Month to remind people of tsunami risks and actions to stay safe.

Tsunamis can strike with little warning, so it's critical to be familiar with the tsunami hazard areas and have a plan.

💡 Did You Know? Hawaiʻi is the only U.S. state entirely surrounded by water, making tsunami preparedness a top priority!

After a flood when it's safe to return, begin to clean up immediately after taking photos, do not wait for a flood insurance adjuster or home inspector to come to your home.

🧤 Wear heavy boots, gloves, and goggles during cleanup: Your home may be contaminated by overflowing cesspools, sewers, maintenance holes, pesticides, animal f***l matter, dead animals, pathogens, chemicals, and associated debris.

🧼 Thoroughly dry and clean or dispose of materials exposed to floodwater, including food, furniture, drywall, carpet, and other floorings. Porous, absorbent materials that cannot be thoroughly cleaned and dried within 24-48 hours should be discarded

📷 After a flood, if your home is damaged or effected, photograph flood damage for insurance purposes BEFORE cleaning up. Clean up immediately after taking photos. After floods, mold grows quickly.

Having images of your house before flood damage will help speed the process of showing the effects and results of the flood.

After a flood, there may be potential hazards lurking in waters.

⚡ Be aware of hazards, i.e. down power lines, broken gas lines, contaminated water, weakened structures, broken glass, etc. Debris on roadways will limit your ability to drive around.
🍂 Avoid wading in floodwater, which may be hiding debris, contaminated with sewage, or electrically charged.
💥 Be aware of hidden structural damage. Floodwater may have weakened roads and building foundations.
🟤 Be aware of brown water advisories. The Department of Health issues brown water advisories to remind the public to avoid dirty water as it may be contaminated. Periods of heavy rain lead to increased runoff into pools of water and the ocean.
🔔 Prevent carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Use generators, pressure washers, or other gasoline-powered machinery outdoors at least 20 feet from doors, windows, or vents.

🌊 Flooding can happen quickly and unexpectedly—here’s how to stay safe! 🌊

✅ DO:
Stay informed! Sign up for emergency alerts.
Move to higher ground immediately if flooding is imminent.
Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters. Just 6 inches of moving water can knock you down, and 12 inches can carry away your car.
Use extreme caution when outdoors and always check the forecast. Use caution even around dry streams. Rain up hill can cause flash flooding even if it is not raining where you are.
Keep your emergency kit and important documents in a waterproof container.
Disconnect electrical appliances to prevent shocks.
🚫 DON’T:
Don’t ignore flood warnings. Evacuate if instructed by authorities.
Don’t let kids play in or near floodwaters—they may contain harmful debris or contaminants.
Don’t drive around barricades. Roads may be washed out or unstable.
Don’t wait! Act quickly to protect your ʻohana and property.

Preparedness and quick action save lives. Stay safe before, during, and after a flood!

🍀 Don’t rely on luck when it comes to disasters! 🍀

This St. Patrick’s Day, take these steps to protect your ʻohana:
🌊 Pick multiple evacuation routes and locations.
🍀 Practice your evacuation route—being prepared is better than being lucky.
🎒 Pack a go bag for each family member.

Stay safe, Hawaiʻi—it’s better to be prepared than to rely on the luck of the Irish! 🌈
