Last December, I visited Ground Transport Inc.’s baseyard in Kapolei and met with President Louis Gomes to dive into the challenges behind the school bus crisis. This year I’m introducing two bills to address the school bus crisis and I hope you can help support them:
🚍 HB861, RELATING TO TRANSPORTATION
The bill designates student transportation as critical infrastructure within our public education system. This change would bring much-needed reforms to how school bus services are managed, including stronger accountability, performance metrics, and proactive communication plans. For years, families have faced the frustration of last-minute cancellations, sometimes just days before school started. This bill requires contingency plans, clearer communication, so that families won’t be left feeling abandoned during critical times.
🚍HB862 RELATING TO TRANSPORTATION SERVICES
This is a reintroduction of my bill to give the Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) the authority to approve alternative vehicles, such as motorcoaches, small buses, and vans, for school transportation. This idea builds on emergency measures used in the past two years under Governor Josh Green’s proclamations. By codifying these provisions into law, we can bypass the need for emergency declarations and give schools greater flexibility to meet transportation needs.

Every child deserves a safe, reliable way to get to school and I hope you can help us get these bills passed by submitting testimony and participating in the legislative process. Together, we can solve this issue and build a system that truly supports our families.

What does the future of education look like in our schools? As I prepare for Legislative Session, my team has been visiting with our schools, inspecting new projects and meeting with our school leaders to advocate for continued investment. This past week, we visited Mililani High School!

🥬 Freight Farm – Fresh from Boston, this innovative vertical farming system (in a shipping container!) allows us to grow fresh produce year-round in a fully controlled environment using hydroponics. It’s efficient, sustainable, and a glimpse into the future of agriculture!

🥎 New Softball Field – A beautiful upgrade of our softball field with state-of-the-art turf showcasing our Trojan pride!!

🚌 Two New 14-Passenger School Buses – These new additions provide some reliable transportation for our students for athletics, off campus events and is also available for our elementary schools to use!

Proud to see these projects come to life and grateful for the opportunity to continue advocating for our Mililani students and families. What school improvements would you like to see in our district?
