There is a lot of sickness spreading in schools right now! Parents and caregivers can take proactive steps to protect children and prevent further spread of illness.

🏠 Keep Sick Children Home: If your child is experiencing symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, or severe cough, keep them home until they are symptom free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication.

đŸ§Œ Practice Good Hygiene: Encourage frequent handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially before eating and after using the restroom. Norovirus is resistant to hand sanitizer.

📅 Stay Up-to-Date on Vaccinations: Ensure your child is current on all recommended immunizations.

(Polk County, IA) — The Polk County Health Department (PCHD) is informing the community of a significant increase in the circulation of illnesses in schools. Sicknesses circulating include norovirus, influenza A, strep throat, pneumonia, and other infectious diseases.

Sick season is upon us, and viral illnesses are circulating at high levels locally and across the U.S.

- Influenza A is surging in the community and remains elevated across the country.
- RSV activity is very high in many areas of the country, particularly in young children.
- This year’s norovirus wave has more than doubled last year’s peak.
- COVID-19 activity has increased in most areas of the country.

Thankfully, there are steps you can take to protect yourself and your community:

- Stay home when you’re sick.
- Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly!
- Know where to go when you're sick—unless a condition is serious or life-threatening, a trip to urgent care is a better use of your time and resources than a trip to the ER.
- Stay up-to-date on flu, COVID, and RSV vaccines to reduce severe illness.

Together we can help stop the spread of illness and keep one another safe.

Staying hydrated is especially important when you're sick! When you're feeling under the weather, keeping up with fluids is key to avoiding dehydration and making a smooth recovery.

đŸ’© Fever, vomiting, and diarrhea can dehydrate your body fast. Fluids help replace what you lose and keep your body functioning.

💧 Drink clear fluids such as water, broth, and low-sugar drinks that contain electrolytes.

đŸ„€ Sip small amounts throughout the day if drinking a lot at once feels overwhelming.

Your body will thank you for staying hydrated!

Fi****ms should always be stored locked and unloaded, with the ammunition stored separately. Keep your family and community safe by storing fi****ms securely and talking to kids about gun safety. Find out where you can pick up a free gun lock in Polk County: https://www.polkcountyiowa.gov/health-department/gun-safety/pick-up-a-free-gun-lock/

Talking with children about gun safety is a good precaution, and those conversations should evolve as children grow older. But it is not a guarantee of protection. Children are endlessly curious and exploration is one of the hallmarks of childhood. That is why it is always an adult’s responsibility to prevent unauthorized access to guns, not a child’s responsibility to avoid them.

Find information about how to talk with children and teens about guns and about how to store them securely at besmartforkids.org.
