**SCAM ALERT**
Recently, we've learned of a scam that threatens our community member with arrest. The scammer will call and pose as a PCSO (or other law enforcement) official and tell the victim they have a warrant for missing court. The scammer will often use technology to make their phone number appear as a local number, at times even using our phone numbers as their caller ID.
The scammer will inform the victim that they have missed court and will be subjected to arrest. They offer the victim a chance to pay a fine in order to cancel the warrant. The scammer may share a copy of a false warrant via email or text message. (While these documents may look official, they are fictitious) The scammer will direct the victim to bring cash to a "government kiosk" for payment. This will often lead victims to a Bitcoin (or other cryptocurrency) ATM, where they will deposit their cash for the scammer to withdraw. At this point it becomes very difficult, even impossible, to get that money back. It is very important to understand that these calls are an attempt to steal money from victims. WHEN IN DOUBT, JUST HANG UP!
REMEMBER: law enforcement agencies will NEVER request payment over the phone to avoid arrest, cancel a warrant, or make threats if action is not taken. We will also never request payment in the form of gift cards, prepaid cards, or cryptocurrency.
If you receive a call making this type of request, simply refuse and hang up. (No report is necessary) If you fall victim to these types of scams, or have already, please call your local law enforcement agency to file a police report.
With scam attempts on the rise, Sheriff Kevin J. Schneider and Chief Judge Michael D. Huppert join together to bring you this important Public Service Announcement.
REMEMBER: Law enforcement agencies will NEVER request payment over the phone to avoid arrest, cancel a warrant, or make threats if action is not taken. We will also NEVER request payment in the form of gift cards, prepaid cards, or cryptocurrency.
