*Attention Grimes Residents*

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has seen an increase in vehicle burglaries and thefts in your area. These appear to be crimes of opportunity where victims have left their car doors unlocked or left their keys inside.

The following safety tips may help to mitigate the chances that your vehicle will be targeted:

• LOCK ALL DOORS AND CLOSE ALL WINDOWS - Keeping the doors locked makes it much more difficult for a potential thief to enter your vehicle. Roll all windows up completely. Leaving the window cracked may allow a thief to use tools to enter your vehicle.

• NEVER LEAVE A RUNNING VEHICLE UNATTENDED OR LEAVE KEYS INSIDE – Doing so gives thieves a window of opportunity to take your vehicle or the items inside.

• NEVER LEAVE VALUABLES INSIDE - Not every thief has the intention to take off with your car... They may want the items inside.

• CALL LOCAL POLICE TO REPORT A THEFT OR BREAK-IN - If you have been a victim, please ensure that you contact your local police department. Make sure you document your license plate number and VIN, in case you need to reference them in your report.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has been receiving calls from our community members regarding a letter they received in the mail. This letter requests donations to the Iowa State Sheriffs’ and Deputies’ Association (ISSDA) and is labeled as being sent out by our Sheriff, Kevin Schneider. This letter may appear suspicious as the return address for the requested donation is a P.O. Box in Wellman, Iowa.

PCSO can confirm that this letter is legitimate. This is an annual fundraiser sent out by Sheriffs across the State of Iowa. The letter invites you to join as an Honorary Member of the Iowa State Sheriffs' & Deputies' Association Institute (ISSDAI).

With that in mind, the ISSDA will ONLY solicit donations by mail. ISSDA will NEVER solicit donations by phone. For more information about the ISSDAI, please visit: https://www.issda.org/issdai-fundraising.
