🚧🏊 EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT 🏊🚧

Beginning April 1st, Des Moines Public Works will begin testing out a new pothole filling method—with the POTHOLE to POOL HOLE project!

Our brightest minds have most of the logistics worked out, with just a few remaining questions like: Chlorine or saltwater? Sound off in the comments!

🏊‍♂️🏊‍♀️🏊‍♂️🏊‍♀️🏊‍♂️🏊‍♀️

Okay, if you've made it this far and still haven't realized what day it is, we apologize for getting your hopes up—Happy April Fool's Day! 😜

While we love a dip in the pool on a hot day, we are sticking with our tried and true asphalt for pothole patching (for now).

Help us patch that pothole interrupting your drive to one of Parks and Recreation's aquatic attractions this summer by reporting it with the myDSMmobile app! Available on iPhone and Android!

Lots of folks are starting their spring lawn care! Consider going for a phosphorus-free fertilizer and be sure to only spread onto your lawn, not on sidewalks or driveways where it can wash away into storm drains!

For more tips on responsible lawncare practices and stormwater management, follow our friends at the The Rain Campaign! 💧

Adding too much fertilizer to your lawn can cause it to runoff your property during the next rain. These fertilizers contain nutrients that can have harmful affects on aquatic life, including algal blooms. Stormwater runs from the storm drain untreated to the nearest water body, so it is important to consider how your actions on your property impact your watershed.

Remember: TURN AROUND, DON'T DROWN.

Most flood fatalities occur in vehicles, and it only takes 12 inches of water to sweep a car away. Sometimes, the difference between life and death is small decisions. weather.gov/safety/flood

We're celebrating the first day of spring by announcing our 2025 Treesure Hunt winner: PETER BOWERS!

Peter was one of our more dedicated Treesure Hunters this year, visiting all eight locations, both in the Skywalk and in four Des Moines Parks! He even submitted a bonus entry of a Hackberry tree he found in the city, which happened to be the entry that was randomly selected as the winner!

We have connected Peter to our Forestry team and they will soon be selecting a tree to be planted somewhere in Des Moines in honor of his keen eye for trees and tree-related art!

Until then, swipe through Peter's submissions and think about getting outside and enjoying our urban forest today!

Join us along with the dedicated staff at the Wastewater Reclamation Authority in congratulating Treatment Manager Larry Hare on his retirement today!

Larry has served the WRA and its 18 member communities in the Des Moines Metro faithfully for over 30 years. Working with our dedicated WRA staff, Larry played a huge role in ensuring that we are responsible stewards of our environment by facilitating treatment of our wastewater.

Colleagues and employees gathered this week to plant a tree with Larry in his honor, a Kousa Dogwood tree that now sits on facility grounds. Part of the WRA's "Roots of Remembrance" program, which plants trees honoring employees with 20 years or more of service, Larry hopes to have this area designated as a butterfly habitat in the future!

We extend our thanks and happiness for Larry as he begins his well-deserved retirement and look forward to having him come check up on his tree very soon!

While snow accumulation seems less likely for our area, we will experience heavy winds once again.

Power outages are possible. Make sure you have a safe place to shelter and keep emergency supplies in your home and vehicle.

High winds are likely Wednesday with gusts up to 65mph will be possible. These winds will be found outside of the area of snow and may lead to tree and powerline damage.

Keep an eye on local forecasts, especially before hitting the roads. Regardless of precipitation type, it's looking to be a windy couple of days.

We're very thankful to hear that there were no injuries reported during tonight's storms.

Members of our Forestry Division, Arborists Russell Davis and Sam Woodson and Heavy Equipment Operator Lewis Lintz, were able to quickly respond when downed trees blocked roadways on the north, south and east sides of town.

After being dispatched by our Customer Service team, employees from our Sewer Operations Division went into action to barracade roadways. This allowed the Forestry crew to operate safely and efficiently as a team, avoiding low-hanging power lines and branches as they cut up and removed the obstructing tree debris. Scroll through the photos to see them in action!

If tonight's wind shook loose more tree debris than can fit in your yard waste cart, feel free to drop it all off at Saturday's Compost SCRUB at 1601 Harriet Street, anytime from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Remember, if you ever see a tree or branch blocking a road, sidewalk or public space, report it with the myDSMmobile app for the quickest response!

Storms will be entering our area soon. Keep up with local forecasts and be prepared to shelter in the lowest or most interior room of your home.

As always, our crews are ready to respond if storm damage occurs. We will always provide necessary updates here, on the City's website and through local media.

Stay safe, Des Moines!

In exactly one week, the first SCRUB Saturday of 2025 kicks off!

Next Saturday, March 15, Des Moines residents can take advantage of FREE disposal of bulk trash items like furniture, appliances, tires and more at the MWA Metro Central Transfer Station (4198 Delaware Avenue): https://www.facebook.com/share/1C3jR5Eiv1/

As the snow melts away, it may have revealed some leftover leaves, or maybe you're taking care of some late winter tree pruning—we've got a SCRUB for that! Bring excess tree and yard waste to the City's Compost Center (1601 Harriet Street): https://www.facebook.com/share/18y64a84jq/

Both events run 7AM-2PM, just bring your ID or a piece of mail for proof of residence and be sure you're following our SCRUB guidelines—for example, single-axle trailers only—available at DSM.city/SCRUB!

🌧️ Goodbye snow, hello rain!

🌼 Spring is near and that means it's time to start planning new projects!

🏡 How about adding something to your home that benefits our waterways while adding beauty to your home?

✅ Commonly approved projects include:

🪻 Rain gardens and native landscaping incorporate beautiful native plants that soak up rain water and provide food and habitats for local pollinators and wildlife!

🌱 Soil quality restoration introduces organic matter into your lawn for greener grass and better absorption of stormwater!

🪣 Rain barrels connect to your gutters to collect rainwater that you can use for your garden, lawn or even washing your car!

💵 The City's Clean Water team is proud to offer residents a 50% reimbursement (up to $2,000) for approved stormwater mitigation projects through its Stormwater Best Management Practices Program.

👉 Visit DSM.city/SWBMP today to learn more! You can even sign up for a FREE site evaluation, where our dedicated staff will visit your home and help you decide if a stormwater project would be beneficial for your property!

🌳 Tiny Trees: Demand is high and supplies are low! Order now at DSM.city/TinyTrees

Flowering Dogwood was the first species we had to turn off on our ordering form after just one week! Now, most of our Persimmon and Serviceberry supply is spoken for!

Get your order in today before your favorite species runs out, and mark your calendar for Saturday, April 26, when you can pick up your trees at Polk County River Place (2309 Euclid Ave.) from 8 a.m. to noon!

We can't wait to help you add trees to your home and grow our urban forest!

❄️ SNOW ORDINANCE UPDATE: All Clear! ✅
..and the end of winter is near! ☀️⛄💦

The Snow Ordinance has been lifted and there are no snow-related parking restrictions at this time.

Thank you for your patience as our crews cleared our streets during yesterday's difficult storm! Our dedicated plow operators have been working 12-hour shifts since Tuesday night, fighting rain, wind, ice and snow!

We may see a bit of rain and snow tonight, but current forecasts only anticipate trace amounts of accumulation for our area. That said, we will always update you if the situation changes at DMSnow.org.

Enjoy watching the snow melt!
