The numbers tell the story. Iowa groups overwhelmingly oppose bills state lawmakers are pushing through the Legislature that would cut people off Medicaid if they can't jump rigid bureaucratic hurdles.

Worse, the bills would use the entire Medicaid expansion enrollment — 180,000 low-income adults covered by Medicaid's Iowa Health and Wellness Plan — as a bargaining chip with the federal government. The State of Iowa would stop covering all 180,000 people if the federal officials were to at any point to reject Iowa's rigid reporting requirements.

Taking away people's insurance won't stop people from getting sick or injured and it won't do anything to help them get into better jobs — it will just make their lives harder. Now is the time to tell your lawmakers to protect Medicaid.

"With every decision, we must weigh the pros and the cons," State Rep. Heather Matson said. "With school choice and yes, with a voucher, a family may choose the private school. Sometimes that may mean you miss out on something the public school offers. You can’t always get everything you want."

Public school districts would have to let private students join their sports teams if the private school doesn't offer the sport, a House bill says.
