Chief Michael McTaggart shares the following statement:
"Protecting our community is our greatest responsibility, and it is always our goal to first respond to crisis situations with efforts to negotiate and de-escalate.
Unfortunately, there are occasions where safety and circumstances limit the de-escalation process.
We will continue to provide our officers with the best training to respond to the wide range of challenging circumstances as they serve our neighborhoods, and support our community partners in their efforts to connect those in need with the mental health resources they need."

"Yesterday, we suffered a loss of one of own, K9 Bero, who died after becoming ill over the last week.
Bero made our neighborhoods safer with his legendary nose for guns, drugs, and dangerous felons. Bero took his talents, and the Des Moines Police Department, to the national stage when he won the first ever National K9 Detection Dog Challenge; one of many awards he earned during his eight years of service.
By his side throughout his decorated career was his partner, coach, and best friend, SPO Dao Meunsaveng. Dao's commitment, dedication, and love for Bero has inspired our K9 Unit, and K9 officers across the state."
- Chief Michael McTaggart
Please keep SPO Meunsaveng, his family, and the members of the DMPD K9 Unit in your thoughts as we support each other through this difficult time.
RIP, Bero.

It was all smiles earlier this week at Heroes and Helpers.
Our officers and Des Moines Fire Department firefighters paired up with kids and helped them check off their Christmas shopping lists at the Merle Hay Mall Target.
Thank you to all our sponsors who helped make this event a reality.
We're not sure who had more fun - the kids or our officers who got to be a part of the holiday magic!

This one stings to watch.
Recently, members of the Des Moines Police Department's 84th recruit class went through pepper spray training - and it's safe to say it isn't the most popular day at the academy.
Training like this is crucial to make sure DMPD recruits are prepared to use pepper spray appropriately and understand what it feels like before using it on someone else. It also teaches recruits how to help someone who has been exposed to the spray recover.
This was a one-of-a-kind day each academy goes through and certainly a day these recruits will never forget!
