IHA welcomed more than 150 hospital board members and CEOs yesterday for the annual Governance Forum, a day dedicated to promoting governance best practices and discussing the key issues affecting hospitals today.

Thank you, Representative Ann Meyer, for your leadership and for standing with Iowans who work and volunteer in our hospitals.

Today on the House Floor I managed HF 310. The bill expands the definition of health care provider under the code chapter that provides enhanced penalties for assaulting a person engaged in certain occupations. This bill expands the definition to anyone working, volunteering or participating in an educational course in a hospital or nursing facility.

Health care workers have been victims of increased violence in the workplace, and these incidences have been increasing exponentially in the past few years.

It passed the House Floor unanimously!

IHA members joined Governor Kim Reynolds today as she introduced legislation that further strengthens rural health care. The bill builds Iowa's physician workforce, creates 115 new residency slots, increases funding for physician and nurse loan repayment programs, stabilizes maternal health, incentivizes regional care models, and more. Thanks to Shelly Russell at Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Kevin DeRonde at Mahaska Health, and Proctor Lureman at Broadlawns Medical Center, for telling our hospital story of innovation, collaboration, and life-changing outcomes.

IHA’s Hospital Heroes program celebrates employees who have acted courageously or selflessly served their hospitals and communities throughout their careers. IHA presented 11 Hospital Heroes awards at its annual meeting. During a fierce blizzard, a team of professionals from UnityPoint Health and MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center came together to save the life of a 4-year-old girl from Bondurant. Recovering from heart surgery, the child faced a complication that required immediate transfer to Children's Nebraska in Omaha. Despite treacherous weather and the child’s fragile state, this team of six orchestrated a high-risk transport through meticulous planning, clear communication and unwavering dedication. The team successfully navigated the storm and delivered the child safely to Omaha, where she underwent lifesaving surgery. Today, thanks to their heroic efforts, the young girl is thriving and enjoying life with her family. https://youtu.be/9CaG3s9dT58

IHA’s Hospital Heroes program celebrates employees who have acted courageously in a moment’s crisis or selflessly served their hospitals and communities throughout their careers. IHA presented 11 Hospital Heroes Awards at its annual meeting last month. Sara Beth Jones is the director of nursing supervision and sexual assault nurse examiner coordinator at Cass Health in Atlantic. One night, Jones encountered a frequent emergency room visitor with a history of substance abuse. Although others may have overlooked the patient’s plea for help, Jones saw beyond the surface, recognizing her as a victim of human trafficking. Through her specialized training and empathetic approach, Jones provided her with the care and support she desperately needed. She ensured the patient’s safety and personally facilitated her journey to freedom. Jones' actions didn’t just save her life – they transformed it. https://bit.ly/3Cqfidi
