Michael B. Hancock became Denver, Colorado’s 45th mayor in July 2011 and immediately began to transform Denver into a globally competitive and connected city. With the fifth-busiest airport in the United State serving more than 53 million passengers per year, Mayor Hancock is leveraging Denver International Airport to make the entire Denver region a major gateway to the world. Mayor Hancock has secured three new, nonstop international flights to Tokyo, Mexico City and Reykjavik, bringing a combined $167.4 million in economic benefits to the region. These routes are opening new connections between the Rocky Mountain West and Asia, Europe and Central America. To help the Denver area compete in the global marketplace, Mayor Hancock also is working to create a bustling Airport City and Aerotropolis, which will create more than 30,000 new jobs over the next 20 years. The first phase of these initiatives includes a new 500-room hotel and transit center at the airport, as well as a 20-mile rail line linking Downtown Denver with Denver International Airport. Mayor Hancock also worked with regional leaders to secure a new U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in Downtown Denver. The Patent Office will generate nearly $440 million in economic benefits over the next five years and establish Denver as a hub of innovation in the high-tech and advanced-industry sectors. The Mayor has also developed strategic short- and long-term business plans to support and grow Denver’s diverse, intelligent and forward-leaning businesses in emerging industries such as clean energy, bio-technology, telecommunications, aerospace and healthcare. Denver’s economy is at the forefront of American cities, offering among the strongest job and housing markets in the U.S. Mayor Hancock has driven bold, smart financial stewardship to make Denver a responsible and desirable private-sector partner. He has maintained a balanced City budget, strong financial reserves and a Triple A credit rating. The Mayor believes there is nothing more important than helping every young person in every neighborhood compete and succeed in the 21st Century economy. He is aligning all City departments with nonprofits, businesses and educational organizations to better prepare all children for every stage of life. Mayor Hancock has also brought meaningful reform to the Denver Police Department by establishing new leadership that has reorganized the department to get highly trained officers out of the office and back onto the streets. These steps together strengthen Denver’s unparalleled quality of life.

On behalf of my entire family, we offer our deepest condolences to the Romer family following the loss of their beloved matriarch and our State’s former First Lady Bea Romer. She was the image of grace and sweetness and always had a kind word and a welcoming presence. Her impact on the quality and accessibility to early childhood education made an enduring impact on the State of Colorado. May God comfort her in his loving arms. Rest in peace. 🕊️

Longtime Colorado first lady Bea Romer, a passionate advocate for early childhood education and services, died Sunday in Denver after a long illness, her family said Tuesday. She was 93.

It’s been the honor of my life to serve as your mayor. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for putting your trust in me and my administration to lead our city these past 12 years – you made a grown man’s childhood dream come true. Together, we cemented Denver’s reputation as one of the most desirable places in the country to live, learn, work, and play.

My hope is that my administration built a solid foundation for the incoming administration of Mayor-elect Mike Johnston to succeed, a foundation that itself was built on the shoulders of the mayors…

Thank you, Denver. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for putting your trust in me and my Administration to lead our beloved city for these past 12 years – through good times and tough times. As my time as your Mayor comes to a close, I see a city that continues to meet challenges with our signature Denver spirit, boldly demonstrating that we are all Denver and we never give up. Thank you once again for the privilege of serving you. May God bless each and every one of you and may God bless our great city.

My hope is that my administration built a solid foundation for the incoming administration of Mayor-elect Mike Johnston to succeed, a foundation that itself was built on the shoulders of the mayors…

During my time as mayor, our Administration has proudly focused on the people, especially those who are most vulnerable.

👉🏾10,000+ affordable homes have been built and preserved.

👉🏾15,000 of our unhoused neighbors have been re-housed.

👉🏾Developed a 24 hour/7 days a week/365 days a year homeless shelter system.

👉🏾We reduced child poverty by 13 %.

👉🏾We raised the minimum wage to $17.29.

07/13/2023

My hope is that my Administration built a solid foundation for the Johnston Administration to succeed. A foundation that’s built on the shoulders of the mayors who came before us.

The pieces are in place for Denver to seize its future:

🛣️$1 billion in infrastructure investments approved by voters will make improvements in neighborhoods throughout the city and drive our economy forward for years to come.

🚧Major projects are primed to elevate Denver, from the revitalization of the 16th Street Mall and improvements to the Convention Center, to the new National Western Center, to preserving the South Platte River to expanding Denver International Airport.

💼Tens of thousands of new jobs and new businesses have been created, taking what was near 9% unemployment during the recession in 2011 to only 2.9% today.

🛫And Denver will continue to connect to the world with the17 international flight destinations we established – which are slated to have a $4 billion economic impact for Colorado.

There was a tremendous amount of excitement, energy as we took the reins of the city. In my first 100 days, we worked to change the culture of Denver's safety dept., close the achievement gap for our young people and set the city on a path to recover from the Great Recession.

Happy Independence Day, Denver!

Today serves as a reminder of the struggles and challenges that were faced and overcome for the right to live a life of freedom and choice. Our freedoms have been hard-fought, and we must continue to honor the sacrifices that were and continue to be made to uphold our unalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

In observance of the Independence Day holiday, most City and County of Denver Government offices will be closed today.

In case you missed it, there's a new soul food restaurant set to open in Five Points. Last week, I joined NBA All-Star and former mayor of Sacramento Kevin Johnson, former Mayor Wellington Webb, leaders from Denver Economic Development & Opportunity and community members for the announcement of Fixins Soul Kitchen, which is set to open along Welton St. in early 2024.

As part of their commitment to our community, Fixins will partner with a local reentry workforce program to train and recruit people from underemployed demographics, creating an estimated 80 new jobs, and will work towards reaching out to support local community partners that provide resources and programs to underserved communities. Additionally, they will work with legacy Five Points businesses and community leaders to help maintain the soul of the neighborhood beyond the kitchen.

Last week, I joined by representatives from Denver Arts & Venues, the Denver Department of Transportation and Infrastructure and VISIT DENVER, to tour progress on the Colorado Convention Center Expansion Project and take part in a fun carpet laying ceremony to mark the occasion. The expansion project, approved by voters in 2015, has supported nearly 2,700 construction jobs, created $195 million in labor income and will add an estimated 2,000 new hospitality jobs to our community upon its anticipated completion later this year.

Investing in communities like Denver’s Sun Valley neighborhood is truly about housing and climate justice. Thanks to historic investments from Biden-Harris Administration, what was once a tank farm will soon be homes for people to raise their families, park space for them to enjoy and an opportunity to reconnect with the South Platte River.

We’re proud to help elevate the folks who live in neighborhoods like Sun Valley that have historically been forgotten.

I’m proud to have worked with Councilman Herndon and community leader, Norman Harris to help make Juneteenth a citywide, commemorative holiday in 2021 and in 2022 moving to ensure that it become a paid holiday for city employees starting today. This move renews Denver’s commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion; and opens the door for residents, especially our young people, to be educated about this moment in American history, learn from its lessons, and embrace and understand its impacts on modern culture. Happy Juneteenth, Denver! 💛💚🖤❤️

Being a father is the most important role I will ever have in this life and I know the other dads out there can relate.

Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there. I hope you enjoy this time with your loved ones.

This weekend, Denverites will celebrate the Juneteenth holiday in the heart of Five Points. I sat down with the Juneteenth Music Festival promoter/organizer, Norman Harris for a quick discussion about the history of the holiday and to gain insight on what his team does to keep this event going - now for 70 years in our community.
