Today, marks the 52nd anniversary since the landmark Roe v. Wade decision which established abortion access as a constitutional right. Donald Trump and the Republican Party's overturning of Roe v. Wade is an assault on personal freedoms that has endangered women's lives across the country and forced too many women and families into hardship.

Thankfully Colorado voters and lawmakers have enshrined this right, and women across the country deserve the same protection of our freedoms that we have here in our state.

The fight to protect reproductive freedom nationwide continues, and Colorado Democrats are proud to lead in that fight.

Republicans on the Pueblo City Council are a key part of Donald Trump’s agenda to raise costs on working families – they’re already proposing a new tax on groceries.

Mayor Graham’s tax would increase the cost of already too-expensive groceries for people in Pueblo. Call her office and tell her you’re against this tax on working people: 719-553-CITY

Pueblo is considering a local tax on groceries. Here's why city officials say it's needed.

Today, Donald Trump was officially sworn in as our 47th President.

We know this was not the result that many of us worked for, and this is going to be a difficult day for many as we watch Donald Trump and his cabinet of billionaires prepare to take our country backward.

The many challenges facing Colorado, our country, and the world call for leadership that can rise to the moment, bridge our divides, and work toward the betterment of all.

That said, we all know Trump’s track record from his first time, what he campaigned for, and we have the receipts to show how unlikely it is that regular working people will benefit from his presidency. If this is anything like last time, the rich will get richer while the rest of us struggle to get by.

Colorado Democrats stand ready to fight back against mass deportations, inflationary economics, unqualified nominees, tax cuts for billionaires and corporations, and attacks on our fundamental freedoms.

We face a daunting task ahead of us, but we are going to tackle it together, and that’s why it’s important to focus on the lessons of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. today as we honor his legacy on this day. Dr. King warned us of the dangers of cowardice, expediency, and vanity in the face of a great struggle. “On some positions, Cowardice asks the question, 'Is it safe?' Expediency asks the question, 'Is it politic?' And Vanity comes along and asks the question, 'Is it popular?' But Conscience asks the question, 'Is it right?' And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular but he must do it because Conscience tells him it is right."

We must all be ready to stand up for what we believe in – even when it feels dire, hopeless, and scary. The next four years demand people who care a whole lot to keep showing up.

We are fortunate to have had as many years with President Carter as we did. As President, he helped us move on from an era of American history punctuated by the Watergate scandal with his positivity, grace, and calm. In the years following his presidency, he set a high bar for the service we should expect of our former presidents alongside his beloved wife and incredible public servant, First Lady Rosalynn Carter. From his community-changing work building homes with The Carter Work Project and Habitat for Humanity, to his dedication to peace and courage in calling out injustice at home and across the world, President Carter exemplified the best of us. His life and his service to the United States reminds us that we are bigger than our politics and his reminder that “to be true to ourselves, we must be true to others” is a lesson we should hold close as we enter the new year. We wish his loved ones peace, and extend our gratitude and appreciation to the entire Carter family for sharing Jimmy with us all.
