Adams County Food Bank began operating in the early 1970’s as the Food Preservation Center, a food pantry serving residents throughout Adams County. In 1979, the program began operating under the auspices of Adams County, where it transitioned to county programs such as Head Start and the Office of Community Outreach. In 2012, the County decided to discontinue the program, citing inefficiencies in operations.
Stakeholders and community leaders recognized that thousands of families, low-income seniors and other Adams County residents would lose their safety net when the County shuttered the program. Working quickly with business and community leaders, they sought to craft a more efficient nonprofit food bank and provide continuity in services.
In 2013 the food bank became an independent organization that would mobilize community support, run more efficiently and leverage community support. Today, the food bank program runs at less than half the cost compared to prior iterations, has strong community support and collaboration; we are stable and sustainable organization that is here for the needs of people who are living at, or below the poverty level, and really need help.
