🌱 Exciting update from the Castlepoint Community Garden! 🌱

Over the summer, our Park Rangers connected with Sharon Jackson, President of the Castlepoint Neighborhood Association, to help enhance the community garden, a vital resource that provides free fresh produce to local seniors.

In 2024 alone, the community garden provided 655 pounds of fruits and veggies to community members! The garden’s biggest need? New flower beds! The old wooden beds were decaying, so our amazing St. Louis County Park Rangers teamed up with our Park Operations and Trades staff to repurpose wooden boards from outdated picnic tables. After months of preparation and hard work, we’re thrilled to announce that 18 new flower beds have been installed!

A huge thank you to everyone including our Park Rangers and Operations Staff who helped make this possible! 🌻🥕🌿

A prescribed burn is scheduled for today (March 25, 2025) around 11-11:30 AM at Creve Coeur Lake Park at the Little Creve Coeur Lake Ecological Area.

Prescribed burns are a vital tool our Parks and Recreation team uses to control invasive species, reduce wildfire risks, and promote biodiversity.

Additional burns are planned for Thursday at Cliff Cave Park and Friday at Queeny Park, though these dates are weather-dependent.

Have you ever wondered why there is a sculpture park in St. Louis County? Let’s take a quick stroll through its history. Laumeier Sculpture Park opened in 1976—almost 50 years ago!

The story begins with Henry H. Laumeier, who married Matilda Cramer in 1941. It was the second marriage for both, and they settled in a big stone house on Rott Road. Over the years, they expanded their estate to 72 acres. Sadly, Henry passed away in 1959 in their home.

In 1963, Wayne C. Kennedy, who was the Director of the St. Louis County Department of Parks and Recreation at the time, had his first meeting with Matilda Laumeier. She was excited about the idea of donating their land for public use, though she made it clear she didn’t want it used for things like playing fields.

Matilda passed away in 1968 at the age of 86, leaving behind an estate valued at $1.6 million. Her will included a generous gift to the county — her home and land in memory of her late husband — with no restrictions on how the land should be used.

Then, in 1976, artist Ernest Trova made a remarkable donation: 40 pieces of his artwork, valued at about a million dollars. This marked the birth of Laumeier Sculpture Park as we know it today. It officially opened on July 7, 1976, as part of the St. Louis County Parks system. Just a year later, a nonprofit was created to support and preserve the park, working hand-in-hand with the county’s Parks Department.

Today, the collaboration between the Parks Department and the nonprofit continues, ensuring Laumeier Sculpture Park remains a unique and cherished cultural space.
