❗All CMCSS schools and district offices will be closed tomorrow, Friday, April 4. ❗

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Warning, two River Flood Warnings (Cumberland and Red) through the weekend, and a Tornado Watch through 10 p.m. tonight for Montgomery County. In the past 24 hours, the amount of rain that has fallen is within an inch of the monthly average for April. Amounts are forecasted to double over the next 48 hours as bands of heavy rain continue through Saturday.

Families, please continue to be vigilant and remember to “Turn Around, Don’t Drown!” It is never safe to drive or walk through floodwaters, and please remind children not to play near storm drains.

Tomorrow’s closure will exceed our five inclement stockpile days by one day for this school year. However, with Governor Lee issuing a State of Emergency and requesting an Emergency Declaration for Tennessee, CMCSS leadership will request a waiver from the Tennessee Department of Education. We will keep families informed in the coming days.

Please know we do not take these decisions lightly. Our top priority is always the safety of the nearly 40,000 students, over 25,000 who are transported on our buses daily, 6,000 employees, and thousands of families in the 544 square miles of Clarksville-Montgomery County. Across the region, this storm system has triggered the most warnings since April 2011 and produced the third most active severe weather day in nearly 4 decades (Credit: Ryan Hall, Y'all).

Please stay weather-aware through the weekend!

📣 All CMCSS schools and district offices are closed today, Thursday, April 3. 📣

We have shifted from the delay to the closure due to an ongoing threat of flash flooding and areal flooding and a moderate risk of severe storms with all hazards possible throughout today. There are reports of downed power lines and trees around the community and crews are working to clear them. Please exercise caution if you must travel today.

Families, last night was a long night for everyone, but it is important we continue to stay weather-aware through the weekend! We will continue to monitor the conditions and provide an update to families later today about school for tomorrow, Friday, April 5.

Carmel Elementary honored its first kindergarten class Tuesday night with a special Senior Night. Class of 2025 students returned to see their kindergarten teachers and opened the time capsule they buried 13 years ago. They were a little taller, a lot wiser, and forever grateful for the dedication of their first teachers.

❗️All CMCSS schools and district offices will operate on a 2-hour delay tomorrow, Thursday, April 3. ❗️

The delay will allow better visibility and more time for crews to assess impacts on buildings and roadways from the predicted overnight storms and potential flooding. While CMCSS is making this delay decision early to give families more time to plan, please be prepared for potential closures depending on the conditions. If we need to shift from a delay to a closure, we will let families know early tomorrow morning.

Families, please stay weather alert tonight! While it is not uncommon for our area to experience strong storms, especially this time of year, the forecasts for this system are particularly concerning for tornadic activity, flooding, strong winds, and hail. Our community is still recovering from the devastating December 2023 tornado and recent flooding, and we all remain hopeful that this system weakens. However, we must be prepared, not scared, and look out for each other. We know this could be a long night for our community. Stay alert and stay safe.

Our region is on high alert for the threat of severe weather overnight and the possibility of flooding through the weekend. We want to ensure all families review their preparation plans and stay tuned to local news and weather over the next few days. Click the following link for safety information from the National Weather Service: https://www.weather.gov/safety/tornado

At this time, there are no changes to school schedules. However, as always, we ask families to please have plans in place if the conditions require closures, delays, or early dismissals. CMCSS will communicate with families via ParentSquare. The district will also share inclement weather closure updates on official CMCSS social media accounts, cmcss.net, and local media. Please ensure that you check your sources when viewing school closure information on social media. For official CMCSS social media, follow us on Facebook and Instagram.

We want to remind families of our severe weather school safety protocols and reassure families that our faculty, staff, and administrators are prepared to protect and comfort students in the event of severe weather. The CMCSS Operations Department continuously monitors the weather, and all CMCSS schools have severe weather plans, designated safe areas, and required drills throughout the school year. If a tornado watch is issued, all classes in portables and outdoor activities are moved inside the school building. If a tornado warning is issued, everyone will move to their designated safe areas and shelter in place as practiced during drills until the tornado warning expires. Additionally, the CMCSS Transportation Department has protocols for severe weather, including rerouting buses to the nearest school in the event of a tornado warning during a route.

In 2019, CMCSS was named a StormReady district by the National Weather Service, and this past February, CMCSS earned recertification through 2029. To receive this distinction, CMCSS:
-Established a 24-hour warning point and emergency operations center.
-Established more than one way to receive severe weather warnings and forecasts and to alert the public.
-Created a system that monitors weather conditions locally.
-Developed a formal hazardous weather plan, which includes training severe weather spotters and holding emergency exercises.

Please stay weather alert, families! If you are new to Tennessee or our region, severe weather season is typically March through May and mid-October through November, but strong storms can happen at any time throughout the year.
