Our local restaurants have joined in to help bring awareness. You don't have to compromise good health when you go out to eat. Many restaurants offer diabetes friendly options. If you are going out for dinner in Boonesboro, this Thursday, which is World Diabetes Day, ask for diabetes, friendly options like the grilled salmon at Branded, the crustless quiche at Stone Werks, or one of the "Diet Menu" options at China Ocean. Remember skip the bread and go for a lean protein and good veggies. You can even ask if they'll skip the rice or potatoes and substitute more veggies. Ask them to skip the butter and use olive oil instead to prepare your meal.
Eating out can still be healthy and enjoyable when you make the right choices. CHOOSE WISELY! 😊

Happy National Diabetes Awareness Day! πŸŽ‰
Let's talk about how to keep our plates healthy and our portions in check.
Creating a balanced plate can make a world of difference in managing diabetes and overall health. Here's a quick guide to the Healthy Plate:
πŸ₯— Half Plate of Veggies: Fill half your plate with a variety of colorful veggies. They’re low in calories and high in nutrients!
πŸ— Quarter Plate of Protein: Dedicate a quarter of your plate to lean protein sources like chicken, fish, tofu, or beans. Protein helps to stabilize blood sugar levels.
🍚 Quarter Plate of Whole Grains: The last quarter should be whole grains or starchy foods like brown rice, quinoa, or sweet potatoes. These provide essential energy without spiking blood sugar.
🍎 Healthy Fats and Fruits: Don't forget to include healthy fats like avocado or nuts and enjoy a small portion of fruit for dessert.
Remember, portion sizes are crucial. Use smaller plates to avoid overeating and measure portions to stay on track. Together, we can support each other in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. πŸ’ͺπŸ’š

GET MOVING!

Exercise is an important part of diabetes care. It doesn't mean you have to become an athlete, but it does mean that you should be consistent and make fitness a part of your everyday routine. Here are some tips from our friends at Fit in Boonsboro:

As you begin a fitness program, keep in mind, start slow and build up gradually!

One day at a time!
1. Move your body everyday! Start with 5 minutes a day. walk up and down your driveway or up and down your stairs. Progress to 10 minutes, then 20 minutes and possibly 30 minutes. Ask a friend to join you for the walk and take it to the park or track.

2. Put on your favorite music & DANCE!!! Yes, dance around your kitchen. Smile and be silly. Have fun! Move & groove to your favorite jam at least 10 minutes a day.

3. Do the following: 15 bodyweight squats- get up off the chair and sit back down. Eventually build up to holding small weights, and then add more repetitions. Honor your knees & don't go past the chair. Look straight ahead, NOT DOWN at your feet. Chest and head up.

4. Walking lunges-10 per side. Start with no weights then add weights or hold soup cans if you don't have weights.

5. Push ups or planks- great for upper body & core strength. If you are able, start with 5 push-ups or 30 second plank holds. Work from the knees or even against the wall. Add time & repetitions as you feel stronger!

REMEMBER- It's about adding a little movement & strength to each day to allow you to keep doing what you love. By doing these simple things each day, you will feel better and you sill see changes.

Stay Active and Healthy: Exercise Tips for Managing Diabetes
Regular exercise is a key component in managing diabetes and improving overall health. Here are some tips to help you get started and stay motivated:
πŸƒ Mix It Up: Incorporate a variety of exercises to keep things interesting. Try walking, swimming, cycling, or even dancing. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week.
🧘 Strength Training: Include strength training exercises, such as lifting weights or using resistance bands, at least two days a week. This helps build muscle, which can improve blood sugar levels.
πŸ•’ Stay Consistent: Set a regular exercise schedule and stick to it. Consistency is key to seeing long-term benefits. Find a time that works best for you and make it a part of your daily routine.
πŸ‘Ÿ Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to how your body feels during and after exercise. If you experience any unusual symptoms, stop and consult with your healthcare provider.
πŸ’§ Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water before, during, and after exercise to stay hydrated and prevent blood sugar fluctuations.
🍎 Check Your Blood Sugar: Monitor your blood sugar levels before and after exercise to understand how different activities affect you. Adjust your food intake or medication as needed.
🏞️ Find a Buddy: Exercising with a friend or joining a group can make workouts more enjoyable and keep you accountable.
Remember, every little bit counts. Start small and gradually increase the intensity and duration of your workouts. Your health is worth the effort!
