We are honored to have Mark as one of our county employees at Station 8. His experience and work ethic shine on a daily basis.

👨‍🚒 Meet the Team: Featuring Mark Kopp

🔥 What is your role within the team, and what are your main responsibilities?
I’m responsible for daily checks of the apparatus and to ensure operational readiness. Working in a very rural area of South County, we face many challenges in the fire service, with much of our area being non-hydranted and with limited staffing. As a station that has a Wildland trailer and UTV, we are often called for throughout the region for Wildland fire and technical rescues that involve access issues in rough terrain.

🚒 How long have you been with DES, and what attracted you to this role?
I’m coming up on our 2-year anniversary in August. I spent 28 1/2 years as a Police Officer in Montgomery County, MD, but started volunteering as a firefighter at age 13 with the South Line Fire Company near Buffalo, NY. I have been a volunteer firefighter in Washington County for the past 21 years. The fire service has always been in my blood, I’m just now lucky to make it a second career.

🎖️ Can you share a memorable experience or achievement from your time here?
My most memorable experience was being able to watch my youngest daughter walk across the stage and being given the honor to pin her badge to become a third-generation firefighter. A very proud moment!

🤝 What do you enjoy most about working with our team/organization?
There is a lot of talent within the Division of Emergency Services. I enjoy learning from those that have the technical experience and ability to think outside the box. They make the job enjoyable, while building friendships and memories.

🚗 Do you have any public safety tips you would like to share with the citizens?
Slow down and move over for emergency vehicles!

Join us in recognizing Mark Kopp for his outstanding dedication to community safety! 👏👏
