Video description: The podcast guest is seated at a table saying, "When people call in for help, they're typically calling about financial issues. They're not calling to say I have a gambling problem and I want to see a therapist. They say I'm in credit card debt, I owe money all over the place, I need help with my finances. So what we're trying to do now is respond to what they're asking for instead of telling them okay, you called me about your finances, I'm going to tell you to go to treatment. So there's a disconnect there and I think we lost some people. So now we're trying to move up and be able to connect people and say okay, we can help you with that question that you may have about your finances. Right now, we can help you put together a plan, moving forward. Meantime. We're also, in most cases, we are encouraging people to get treatment, to get support services, so they can really move forward in their recovery journey or reduce the harm."

Conversations aimed at overcoming barriers to addiction and mental health care took place this past weekend at the 2025 SOMOS Inc. New York Conference.

OASAS Commissioner Chinazo Cunningham joined a panel discussion titled "Breaking Barriers in Addiction & Mental Health" with other experts including Senator Nathalia Fernandez. The panel focused on issues such as stigma, inequality and a lack of culturally competent services, which make it particularly hard for Black, Latino, and AAPI communities to get treatment. They also talked about ways to ensure equitable care for everyone.

This important conversation reflects a dedication to addressing these issues and making a positive difference. 🌟

Exciting news for Central New York as the first Mobile Medication Unit (MMU) launches in Madison County, providing essential services to underserved areas.

Acting Deputy Commissioner of Programs Pat Lincourt and Chief of Addiction Medicine Pamela Mund represented OASAS at the ribbon-cutting, celebrating the opening of the MMU. Operated by Helio Health, this unit is set to make a real difference! It is the first opioid treatment program in Madison County, thanks to federal funding distributed by OASAS. It will offer services including medication for addiction, health assessments, screenings, referrals to other types of care and harm reduction initiatives.

For now, the unit is stationed on North Court Street, but it may expand to more locations in the future! This marks the third MMU in New York State and the first outside of New York City, with eight more programs on the horizon.

“Medication for addiction saves lives by significantly reducing the risk of overdose death, and this new mobile unit will give people in the Central New York region another avenue to access the important care they need,” said OASAS Commissioner Dr. Chinazo Cunningham.

It includes audio of the podcast guest saying, "People were skeptical about a supportive housing program in their neighborhood and we've really changed the viewpoint. When we had our grand opening back in 2019, we had a city councilman at the time came over and he admitted he was a skeptic. He wasn't sure he was supportive of a project like this, and once he saw what we were doing, the beautiful place to live that we're able to provide and the voices of the folks living there, he came out and said you know, this is the model of supportive housing for New York State. I want every project to look like this and to operate like this, so it was a magical moment."
