The Boyle Street Community Services (BSCS) Artist-in-Residence opportunity welcomes artists working across all disciplines, including but not limited to visual arts, literary arts, performance, and traditional and contemporary Indigenous practices. The residency encourages proposals that centre cultural connection, healing, and collaboration with marginalized communities, especially those with lived experiences of houselessness or social exclusion.

Artists who have not previously worked with Boyle Street Community Services or in similar settings are welcome to apply and encouraged to demonstrate relevant experience or a strong interest in working with marginalized communities through a commitment to community-driven, collaborative artmaking.

The deadline for submissions is 11:59 AM (noon) on March 14, 2025.

For this initiative, the EAC will fund one residency of up to 12 months of full-time work. The maximum budget for this residency is $100,000.

Edmonton-born artist Brandon Blommaert brings life to recycling in his photographs for Ambleside and Kennedale Eco Stations. With personal experience working in a paper sorting plant, Blommaert has an interesting and personal perspective on the process of recycling. Featuring Alberta’s beautifully diverse landscapes, Blommaert has digitally inserted monster-like creatures made from post-consumer waste into pristine vistas that cover sections of the exterior walls of the buildings.

Using trash on the street and found objects, the artist sketched, experimented and spent time with the materials until these characters slowly emerged. In combining these man-made elements into natural landscapes, the artist creates the sense that these creatures, though out of place, have somehow sprung to life and are now carrying on by themselves.

Blommaert’s work for the eco stations comments on traditional landscape imagery, where human traces are omitted, while most landscapes are in reality covered in traces of human endeavour, waste or things that will someday be waste. As a reflection of Brandon’s personal interest and experience with post-consumer waste, the works allow us to re-imagine what is means to be a consumer, a recycler and an Albertan lucky enough to live in a province rich in natural beauty.

12/03/2024

On the west side of City Hall is an abstract sculpture that has a long history in the city. Originally unveiled in June of 1957, “The Migrants” by artist Lionel A. J. Tomas was produced with the help of two assistants in Vancouver before the 20-foot high sculpture was assembled on site in Edmonton.

Inspired by Canada Geese, the artist made sketches of the birds in Stanley Park over several days. The three-dimensional drawing of bronze tubes depicts a flock of nine abstracted geese. Five standing and four flying geese symbolize Edmonton as a destination for progress and the aviation gateway to the North, while paying tribute to the city’s history and the immigrants who played a role in building the city.
