🚨 WTOP Reports: Donations to Miriam’s Kitchen Drop Amid Federal Layoffs 🚨

Miriam’s Kitchen is experiencing a significant decline in donations as federal workforce layoffs impact our community. This drop in giving comes at a time when our services are more critical than ever.

💡 The need hasn’t changed—but our resources have. We remain committed to providing meals, housing support, and services to our neighbors experiencing homelessness, but we can’t do it alone.

Here’s how you can help:

Every contribution makes a difference. Together, we can ensure that everyone in DC has a safe place to call home.

Miriam’s Kitchen said it is concerned that a dip in private giving — evident in the final quarter of 2024 — could worsen with layoffs of federal government workers and federal contractors.

Tell the Deputy Mayor: Don't Evict Whitehurst Encampment Despite recent snow and frigid temperatures, DC’s Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services (DMHHS) plans to close one of DC’s largest remaining encampments on February 7th. Encampment evictions do not end homelessness; they make it worse. Sign the petition now! https://www.thewayhomedc.org/take-action?vvsrc=%2fPetitions%2f5457%2fRespond

🏠 URGENT: Call to Action 🏠
On February 7th, DC plans to close the Foggy Bottom encampment, one of the largest remaining encampments in the city. With temperatures expected to remain dangerously low, this closure will put 15 individuals at severe risk of harm.

Encampment closures during hypothermia season don’t solve homelessness—they make it harder for unsheltered individuals to access services and rebuild their lives. We know the solution: housing, not displacement.

We call on the Bowser Administration to immediately postpone this closure and halt all encampment closures during hypothermia season. DC must prioritize housing-first solutions and allocate resources to end chronic homelessness. https://www.miriamskitchen.org/blog/statement-on-whitehurst-encampment-closure/

🛑 Take action: Share this post. Raise your voice. Let’s protect our neighbors. ❄️

DC’s Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services (DMHHS) has scheduled a site closure for one of the largest remaining encampments in Foggy Bottom (located at 27th and K Streets NW), amid the coldest stretch of winter weather this season. The encampment closure is currently set to take place on Feb...

🧡This Thanksgiving, we are filled with gratitude for our incredible community of supporters, volunteers, and advocates who make our work possible. 🦃💛

Every day, we strive to provide meals, services, and hope to our unhoused neighbors, but none of it would be possible without you. Together, we are making a tangible difference in the fight to end homelessness.

As we gather around the table with our loved ones, let us remember those who are still seeking a place to call home. Your generosity and compassion fuel our mission to ensure everyone in our community has the dignity, stability, and support they deserve.

🍂 Just in time for Thanksgiving, formerly homeless families in D.C. have a reason to celebrate!
The Aston, a new shelter in Ward 2, offers private rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms—providing dignity and safety for couples, adult families, and individuals. At the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
For Wesley Thomas, MK Advisory Board member and former resident of the streets, touring the Aston was emotional: “I almost cried. It gives residents pride and a safe haven, allowing them to move forward positively.”
Together, we can create safe, transformative spaces for those in need. 💛

Just in time for Thanksgiving, some formerly homeless families will be celebrating in a brand-new shelter in D.C.

Thank you The Washington Home for all your support.

Congratulations to our partner Miriam's Kitchen on a successful community RUN-4-MK on the C&O Canal with more than 400 participants, as well as many more at the satellite run on the Mall on Saturday - including a team from The Washington Home!

Through this community engagement, nearly $100,000 was raised to support efforts to end homelessness and food insecurity in our DC area! MK also collected hats, gloves, scarves, and coats at the run for use by their onsite guests, ensuring the guests will have proper clothing to stay warm this winter.

🏠 Edward’s Journey of Resilience, Hope, and Finding Home

This Homeless Awareness Week, we’re sharing the inspiring story of Edward Johnson—a DC native who, at 62, faced homelessness but never gave up hope. With support from Miriam’s Kitchen, Edward found his way back to stability and rediscovered his purpose. 🧡

Read Edward’s full journey here: https://issuu.com/miriamskitchendc/docs/304656_mk_fall24_p4/s/61060930

Edward’s story reminds us of the power of community and the importance of ensuring everyone has a place to call home. This week, let’s commit to taking action to create more stories of transformation.

💡 Ways to help:
✅ Advocate for policy changes
✅ Volunteer your time
✅ Donate to programs that make a lasting impact

Together, we can make housing a human right.

Edward Johnson’s journey is one of resilience, hope, and the power of community. At 62, Edward, a DC native, cherishes family, keeping close ties with his siblings through daily texts. But his path has not been easy.
