Today marks a rare historic intersection between two important American events. Every year, we honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., whose profound contributions to American civic life are remembered and celebrated on this day. The inauguration of a new president, however, happens only once every four years. Why do these two events coincide?

The presidential inauguration date is set as January 20 by the 20th Amendment of the Constitution, ratified on January 23, 1933. Fifty years later, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was officially made a federal holiday on “the third Monday in January” by Public Law 98-144 on November 2, 1983. Since then, the only other time when Inauguration Day and MLK Day have fallen on the same date was in 1997 for President Bill Clinton’s second term.
