As #HurricaneBeryl continues its destructive path through the Caribbean and toward Jamaica, its wind speeds are getting a lot of attention. But other hurricane hazards, like storm surge and flooding, can be more dangerous - and potentially deadly. This is one reason why USAID - US Agency for International Development prepares all year for the impacts of hurricane season.
Our teams remain on high alert, monitoring #HurricaneBeryl as it moves toward Jamaica and coordinating with partners and the local government to assess the extent of the damage already done in the Southeast Caribbean. Watch this space for updates.

Part of what makes natural disasters like floods so difficult to respond to is that they wipe out the transportation networks we rely on to reach already vulnerable people. This was exactly the case late last year in Somalia, where floods displaced 900,000 people, including many who were living in makeshift displacement camps due to conflict.
To help, UNICEF utilized a fleet of small boats to navigate floodwaters and deliver needed supplies from USAID - US Agency for International Development that can help curb dire impacts from this astonishing humanitarian crisis.
