Socially Conscious Sheltering tenet #1:
Every community must have a safe shelter facility where homeless or unwanted animals can receive care. Ongoing outreach and engagement are critical to increasing community awareness of the services the shelter provides.

Socially Conscious Shelters support each other and collaborate to make their resources meaningful and accessible to their respective communities.

Mosquitoes, like all insects, are cold-blooded creatures… and are incapable of regulating their body heat. Therefore mosquitoes function best at 80°F, become lethargic at 60°F, and cannot function at temperatures below 50°F. As winter approaches mosquitoes (or their eggs, contingent on the species) enter a type of hibernation called diapause. Once it starts to become consistently warm outside… eggs will hatch and mosquitoes will wake to resume their feeding and breeding activities.

As the weather warms, around your home, check containers (such as buckets, trash cans, flowerpots, and plant saucers), bird baths, fountains, pet dishes, gutters and swimming pools (anything that may have been out over winter that may have collected water) and dump any water. You’ll want to continue to dump these items at least once a week.

Remove old tires and fill any depressions or holes in the ground that collect water with dirt.

You can also look at using a bacterial larvicide such as Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) which is a naturally occurring bacteria that is toxic to mosquito larvae in items that you can not dump or places that you can not reach to fill in with dirt.

Colorectal cancer normally begins with a growth (called a polyp) on the inner lining of the colon or re**um. Polyps are common, especially as we age, and most don't become cancerous.

Screening is one of the best tools we have to fight colorectal cancer. If you're between the ages of 45-75, ask your doctor whether you're up to date with your screenings.

15/03/2025

Today is International Long COVID Awareness Day. Symptoms can be mild to debilitating, and can last for months to years. Common symptoms are extreme fatigue (especially after activity), dizziness, and problems with smell or taste. It can also lead to conditions like diabetes, blood clots/stroke, heart disease, mood disorders, and more.

Currently, 18 million Americans are living with long COVID. The exact cause isn't known yet, so researchers are continuing to study it. Groups at higher risk include people who:

-Have had a severe COVID infection
-Have had multiple COVID infections
-People with underlying health conditions, like diabetes or asthma
-Have not gotten a COVID vaccine

People between the ages of 35-49 are the age group that has had the most long COVID diagnoses. If you have long COVID, we see you and hope new information and treatments become available soon.
